“I was so scared. I didn’t expect this to happen. We flew for about half an hour and suddenly, two men shouted ‘There’s a fire!’

“We saw the upper deck’s luggage was on fire. The fire was quit big. I was so scared my legs were shaking.

“All of us started to pour water over it. We were afraid that the fire would be re-ignited.”

“We couldn’t do anything in the air – I could only pray for safety.”

Passengers extinguished the flames after 20 minutes

After about 20 minutes of struggle, the fire was finally put out. Passengers reported feeling relieved but also worried. They feared the smoke could be harmful.

Thankfully, there were no injuries reported due to the fire.

Once the flames were gone, the cabin crew closed the overhead locker. It was clear that the inside was damaged.

They stuffed a fire blanket inside the locker to ensure the fire would not reignite. Passengers were still in shock from the experience.

Due to the fire, the pilots had to make an emergency landing.

The plane was only halfway through its journey when it landed safely at Fuzhou Changle International Airport.

Fire engines were waiting on the tarmac as the aircraft touched down.

When the plane landed, passengers felt a mix of relief and gratitude. They clapped as they realized they were safe.

The crew quickly evacuated the passengers from the aircraft. They were taken away from the plane by bus.

A spokesperson for Hong Kong Airlines confirmed that the flight, HX115, had to divert and land safely due to a fire in the overhead compartment.

“Flight HX115, departing from Hangzhou to Hong Kong diverted and landed safely in Fuzhou Changle International Airport due to a fire in the overhead compartment, which was successfully extinguished.”

Passengers were understandably shaken but were thankful for the quick actions of the cabin crew and each other.
