Malcolm and Angus’s sister, Margaret, when brainstorming band names, noticed “AC/DC” on her sewing machine’s AC adapter. 

The abbreviation stands for alternating current/direct current electricity. 

The brothers believed this symbolized their band’s raw energy.

While most fans call them AC/DC, Australians affectionately refer to the band as “Acca Dacca.”
