Final Easter Blessing from the 88-Year-Old Pontiff
The 88-year-old pontiff, Pope Francis, wished “Happy Easter to everyone” in his final act of devotion, deeply supported by his aides.
He delighted 35,000 faithful at the Vatican on Easter Sunday with an appearance on the balcony at St. Peter’s Basilica before passing away today.
However, appearing weary and exhausted, he needed help from his aides while sitting on the balcony, watching Archbishop Diego Ravelli deliver the Easter blessing to the large crowd.
Last Moments of the 88-Year-Old Pontiff
During the blessing, Pope Francis’s aides adjusted his papal robes and helped him drink water through a straw. His energy was limited, but he continued to fulfill his duties as best he could.
The Pope did not celebrate the Easter Mass in the piazza the previous day. Instead, he delegated this responsibility to Cardinal Angelo Comastri.
Francis had recently left the hospital on March 23 after battling a severe infection that developed into pneumonia in both lungs.
His health had deteriorated, but he remained committed to his mission. Even in these final days, Pope Francis displayed a determination to serve the faithful. His final moments were marked by his deep connection to the people and his unshakable faith.
Pope Francis’s Legacy and Impact
Pope Francis left a significant legacy in both the Church and society.
He took to social media to share his Easter message and called for an end to conflicts around the world. In his final sermon, he urged “all those in positions of political responsibility” to use “weapons of peace” and condemned the “thirst for death” witnessed daily.
He also prayed for peace and freedom for war and political prisoners, as well as those affected by global conflicts.
