According to ABC News, Mr. Cameron shared that: "I see parallels to the tragedy of the Titanic, where the captain was constantly warned of ice ahead of the ship, but plunged into an 'ice sheet' at full speed on a moonless night, and many died as a result. "
He expressed his astonishment, that the same tragedy occurred again due to the failure to heed the warning at the exact same location where dives were still taking place around the world.
The famous director said that the news that the Titan submersible exploded "is certainly not a surprise".
He said that when he first heard about the disappearance of the Titan submersible, he immediately thought the worst that could have happened.
A scene emerged in his mind, that of an explosion. The shock wave was so strong that it even destroyed the pressure system of the submersible. Also, he continued to search more carefully and got information that seemed to indicate that the ship must have exploded. He said the search operation over the past few days was based on futile hopes.
"I watched over the ensuing days this whole sort of everybody-running-around-with-their-hair-on-fire search, knowing full well that it was futile, hoping against hope that I was wrong but knowing in my bones that I wasn’t,” Cameron told Cooper.
He expressed condolences to the families of the passengers.
On June 18, the Titanic submersible carrying five passengers participated in a tour of the wreck of the Titanic and was confirmed missing.
On June 22, the rescue team stated that the wreckage of the submersible was found near the Titanic area at a depth of 3,800 meters.
This announcement concludes a four-day international search and rescue operation. Analysis showed that debris found on the sea floor matched the explosion scene in the Titan submarine's pressure chamber, officials said. All five people on the Titan submersible are presumed dead.
