A trans golfer, Nicole Powers, steps away from women’s sports after admitting she is not a woman.
Nicole Powers, a transgender golfer, has decided to stop competing against biological females. She acknowledges the unfair advantage and aims to promote fairness in sports.
Nicole Powers acknowledged an unfair advantage when participating in women’s sports
Powers, who previously competed in various sports, realized it was not fair to participate in women’s events.
Despite being a transgender woman, she recognized that biological differences impact athletic performance.
“I had to take a step back and realize that biological realities are real,” she said. Powers understood that even after years of hormone therapy or surgeries, competitive advantages remain.
Powers faced pushback from coaches and competitors. Many insisted she belonged in women’s sports.
“They said, ‘You belong here,’ even when I disagreed,” Powers revealed.
She felt pressured to conform, despite her belief that competing against biological females was not appropriate.
“I’m not a woman; I’m a trans woman,” she stated. “I’m defending my reality against people telling me otherwise.”
Nicole Powers admitted she held back during competitions
During competitions, Powers consciously avoided giving her best. She didn’t want to draw attention to her advantage. “If I’m on the tee box with three other women, I’m not going to bomb a 310-yard drive,” she explained.
Powers admitted to holding back intentionally, despite knowing she could perform better. “I would club down, lay off my game, because I didn’t want to raise flags,” she said. She felt uneasy about potentially taking awards from women athletes.
“In the back of my head, I knew I wouldn’t feel right if I did take awards [from women],” she admitted.
Title IX and trans athlete regulations
More than two dozen states have regulations regarding trans athletes competing against biological females. Recently, President Biden’s Title IX revisions provided more protections for trans athletes. This change led to significant backlash.
Powers believes governing bodies must listen to female athletes. “They need to listen to women, adult human females, and understand their concerns,” she stated.
She advocates for clear distinctions between men’s and women’s sports, emphasizing that this stance is about fairness, not discrimination.
“There has to be a clear line in the sand,” she said. “The original reason for separate categories was fairness, and that needs to remain.”
Nicole Powers’s decision to step away from women’s sports stems from a commitment to fairness. Nicole Power’s story showed the ongoing debate around transgender athletes and the balance between inclusion and equity.
By sharing her perspective, Niclo hopes to spark changes that ensure fair competition for all athletes.
