The University of Connecticut (UConn) has installed emergency contraceptive vending machines dispensing Plan B on campus starting in early February.
This follows a new state law expanding access to contraception.

The 2023 law, passed after the Roe v. Wade decision was overturned, allows pharmacists to prescribe contraception in pharmacies after completing brief training.
It also permits the sale of emergency contraception like Plan B through vending machines, making it more accessible without a doctor’s prescription.
The law took effect on December 27, 2024, and UConn quickly installed its first emergency contraceptive vending machine on the Storrs campus.
The Growing Role of Pharmacists in UConn’s Healthcare System
UConn’s School of Pharmacy launched a voluntary training program for pharmacists in early February, after approval from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.
Governor Ned Lamont said, “UConn is expanding access to contraception and other essential medications.
Pharmacists are key players in healthcare, from vaccines to prescribing birth control.”
State officials believe increasing access points at places like UConn will help lower-income individuals, especially those without a gynecologist.
Challenges with Insurance and Payment
The program faces a challenge with insurance coverage.
Pharmacists’ services are not currently covered by insurance, leaving no clear billing system for prescriptions.
Three bills are under review in Connecticut’s legislature to address reimbursement for pharmacists.
Nathan Tinker, CEO of the Connecticut Pharmacists Association, said, “Pharmacies are eager to join, but there is no clear payment system.”
