The White House addresses inquiries regarding Elon Musk’s fashion choices as discussions intensify over his involvement in the Zelensky controversy.
The White House has issued a response after being questioned about Elon Musk’s outfit choices.
The inquiry came amid ongoing tensions between former President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky criticized for military attire during White House visit
On February 28, Zelensky visited Trump at the White House. His military attire, worn in solidarity with Ukrainians fighting against Russia, sparked criticism.
Right-wing reporter Brian Glenn confronted Zelensky about his outfit. He asked, “Why don’t you wear a suit? You’re at the highest level in this country’s office and you refuse to wear a suit. Do you own a suit?”
Glenn continued, stating that many Americans found Zelensky’s attire disrespectful to the office of the presidency.
Zelensky quickly defended his choice.
He responded, “Maybe something like yours, maybe something better, maybe something cheaper,” and added that he would wear a suit once the war in Ukraine ended.
White House press secretary addresses Musk’s attire
During a press briefing on March 5, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked about Musk’s outfit choices.
The Tesla CEO is often seen wearing a t-shirt and a MAGA baseball cap, even in formal settings.
Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy pointed out that some officials were upset over Zelensky’s lack of a suit. He then asked, “But Elon Musk never wears a suit. So what is the dress code?”
Leavitt responded, “Well, Elon Musk wore a suit last night. I’m sure you saw it.”
Doocy pressed further, asking if Musk had been “spooked” by Zelensky’s removal from the White House.
Leavitt dismissed the suggestion, stating, “No, I don’t think so. I’m just pointing out that he did wear a suit last night and I think the president liked that very much and he looked great.”
Musk’s appearance at Trump’s congressional address
Musk was in attendance for Trump’s address to Congress. During the speech, Trump publicly acknowledged the billionaire.
“I have created the brand-new Department of Government Efficiency: DOGE. Perhaps you’ve heard of it,” Trump said.
He continued, “Which is headed by Elon Musk, who is in the gallery tonight. He’s working very hard. He didn’t need this. We appreciate it.”
Trump then turned to the Democratic side of the chamber and remarked, “Everybody here, even this side, appreciates it, I believe. They just don’t want to admit that.”
From the viewing gallery, Musk responded with a salute.
Additionally, for the occasion, Musk had ditched his usual t-shirt and MAGA cap. Instead, he opted for a button-up shirt and tie, marking a rare departure from his casual style.
The controversy highlights ongoing debates over dress codes for political figures and public officials.
While some argue that attire reflects respect for institutions, others believe actions matter more than appearances.
The debate over appropriate dress in high-profile meetings is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
