Oiio, an architectural firm in New York City, is proposing an ambitious project: a 4,000-foot skyscraper named “The Big Bend.”

If built, this innovative structure could become the longest building in the world, challenging conventional skyscraper design.

Breaking the mold: The unique U-shape design

Unlike traditional skyscrapers, which rise straight up, The Big Bend features a distinctive U-shape.

This design aims to bypass strict New York planning laws and reduce costs.

While, by bending the building instead of building it straight up, Oiio hopes to create a massive structure without needing to purchase additional air rights.

The smart design strategy

New York’s planning laws require developers to buy air rights for taller buildings.

A straight 4,000-foot structure would be incredibly expensive. However, by folding the building back down, Oiio can avoid this cost. The U-shape allows for a larger structure while staying within budget.

Additionally, the 4,000-foot skyscraper ‘Big Bend’ boasts innovative features.

The skyscraper includes a looping elevation system.

A standout feature of The Big Bend is its elevator, which travels in a continuous loop around the U-shaped bend.

According to Oiio, the elevator can move horizontally and in curves, using a track-changing system to connect the top and bottom of the building. This will provide an extraordinary experience for occupants.

How big is the Big Bend?

The Big Bend would dwarf existing skyscrapers.

It would surpass the Burj Khalifa in Dubai by more than 1,000 feet in length. In terms of height, it would be 200 feet taller than New York’s One World Trade Center.

Additionally, Oiio’s designer, Ioannis Oikonomou, envisions a shift from traditional height measurements.

Instead of focusing on height, he proposes measuring buildings by their length. The Big Bend could set a new standard for skyscraper design, becoming one of Manhattan’s most iconic and prestigious structures.

Will the Big Bend become a reality?

With its huge height, many wonder about the reality of this 4,000-ft skyscraper, Big Bend.

One person wondered: How would the elevators curve….

A second said: A Trombone Slide! It’s a weird looking skyscraper, while the rest of the Trombone is long way underground. You could call it “A Trombone Slide Skyscraper”.

While a third commented: Make NYC cool again by building this

While The Big Bend’s design is groundbreaking, Oiio is still looking for investors to bring the vision to life.

If funded, this ambitious project could forever change New York’s skyline. We’ll have to wait and see if The Big Bend becomes a reality.
