A woman was arrested after making a brief three-word statement to her insurance company, leading to unexpected legal consequences.
A woman from Florida has been arrested after making a threatening phone call to an insurance company.
Briana Boston, 42, has been charged with making threats of mass violence.
This incident has raised concerns about the seriousness of threats made over the phone, especially during these tense times.
Florida woman threatens insurance company after refusal of medical insurance claims
On December 10, 2024, Briana called BlueCross Blue Shield regarding her medical insurance claims, which had been denied.
During the conversation, she used a phrase that caught the attention of authorities: “Delay, Deny, Depose.”
These words are reportedly linked to a recent violent crime involving another individual, Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing an insurance CEO.
Briana’s choice of words alarmed the insurance company staff, prompting them to report the incident.
After the call, the FBI was informed, and they quickly instructed the local police to take action.
The background of the woman
Briana has no prior criminal record. She is a mother of three and has lived a life without any serious legal issues until now.
The police arrived at her home and questioned her about the call.
During the questioning, she admitted to using the threatening phrase but claimed she did not mean any harm.
Briana expressed frustration with healthcare companies, saying they “play games” and deserve consequences for their actions.
She said that news coverage about the recent violent incident involving Mangione had influenced her.
FBI arrested the woman after her threatening claims to the insurance company
After she confessed, the authorities arrested Briana and charged her with making threats against the insurance company.
The police took her remarks seriously, especially given the current climate surrounding threats of violence.
Lakeland Police Chief Sam Taylor emphasized that making such threats is unacceptable.
“She’s been in this world long enough that she certainly should know better that you can’t make threats like that in the current environment that we live in and think that we’re not going to follow up and put you in jail.”
Speaking of her phrasing, he added: “She readily admitted that, ‘Yeah that’s exactly what I said but I didn’t mean anything by it’.
“Well, you don’t get to pull that back after you say it.”
The judge deemed Briana’s $100,000 bond appropriate due to the serious nature of the threat.
Her lawyer, Jim Headley, requested her release, citing her clean record and family responsibilities.
“My client is 42, married mother of three. Never had any criminal charges or convictions.
“May you release her on her own recognizance.”
