A normal start to life

Jayden grew up in Adelaide, South Australia, with his parents and two siblings.

He describes his family as having a lower-class income, living from paycheck to paycheck.

They often struggled to make ends meet and sometimes faced difficulties keeping their home.

This normal childhood changed dramatically when his father bought a lottery ticket.

He said: “I grew up in Adelaide, South Australia, with a sister, older brother, and mum and dad.

Very normal, and definitely more of the lower class income [bracket].”

Jayden’s father won the lottery unexpectedly.

Jayden’s father was a bit of a gambler and had a habit of playing the same numbers.

One day, this habit paid off when they won the lottery. Overnight, the family went from being financially constrained to becoming multi-millionaires.

Jayden recalls that he was too young to grasp the significance of their win at first.

It took years for him to understand how unique and life-changing this experience was.

“Overnight, we went from pretty decently poor to multi-millionaires.

“Life changed from there. Growing up, I was so young, I had no understanding of the lottery or money… and how unique it was to happen to us.

“It wasn’t until years later that it made more sense to me why life was very different.”

In a memorable moment, Jayden shares how his mother surprised him and his siblings with the news of their win.

She brought them into a room and revealed a giant check that represented their lottery winnings.

“Mom and dad took us three kids into a room and literally just showed us a gigantic check.”

This moment was surreal for the children, who initially thought their mother had some other big surprise, like a pregnancy.

After winning, his parents became very cautious about their privacy.

They were concerned for their children’s safety and wanted to keep their new lifestyle as normal as possible.

They took some time off school to figure out how to manage their new wealth.

Since they didn’t have any role models for handling money, they had to learn quickly.

The impact on family life

Jayden reflects on how the win affected him and his siblings. He describes a “weird mentality” about money and work.

Growing up in a beautiful home in a neighborhood with affluent people made them feel out of place.

Despite their wealth, they often felt like the “Bogan Lottery Family.”

This term is used in Australia to describe working-class individuals who suddenly gain wealth but might not fit in with the upper class.

Jayden admits that he felt embarrassed about their wealth.

He often thought they didn’t deserve it because they hadn’t worked hard for it.

This feeling created a sense of imposter syndrome in him.

He wanted to connect with others who had similar experiences but often felt guilty for being lucky.

“You have this weird mentality of work and the value of money… it never felt natural.

I wanted to share my story, but also [I felt] embarrassed by it… we didn’t deserve it, because we didn’t work hard for it.”

He adds, “We’d feel out of place in between two realities… we were made to feel it wasn’t anything to be proud of.”

Jayden’s parents generously shared their wealth.

Despite their feelings, Jayden’s parents were generous with their newfound wealth.

They shared their good fortune with family and friends, which helped to ease some of the guilt.

This principle of sharing has stayed with Jayden, and he carries it into his adult life.
