The disruption happened as the athletes were jockeying for position heading into the home stretch.

Mills claimed that he was “stepped out on” just as he was about to make his move, causing him to be taken down along with several other competitors.

In a post-race interview with the BBC, Mills expressed his frustration, saying, “I think it’s pretty clear.

I got stepped out on as I was about to kick in the home straight and boom, a French lad took me down.”

When asked about what he had said to Hay in the heated exchange, Mills responded, “I’m probably not allowed to say, but yeah, said I’d… yeah.”

Despite the dramatic incident, Mills remained hopeful that British Athletics would appeal the result and that he could still have a chance to compete in the final.

He said, “I’m pretty sure that BA [British Athletics] will be on it and put an appeal in, I hope.

From my perspective, that was a perfect qualifier for me going through the first 2k in six minutes.”

French runner claimed he didn’t do any wrongdoing.

On the other side, Hay expressed surprise and uncertainty about his potential involvement in the incident.

“I’m really surprised. I just hope that I didn’t do anything and I will not be disqualified,” he said.

“For me, that was nothing. Like I said to George, I will watch the images and if I’m the guy that did it, I will apologize.

For me, I didn’t do anything,” he repeatedly said.

In a follow-up development, British Athletics announced that Mills, along with Spain’s Thierry Ndikumwenayo, the Netherlands’ Mike Foppen, and Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu of the Refugee Olympic team, have been advanced to the final on Saturday, August 10th.

The race referee made this decision following the collision.

Social media reactions

After the incident, fans and fellow athletes quickly took to social media to express their opinions.

Some sided with Mills, believing that Hay’s actions were unsportsmanlike.

They argued that cutting in front of another runner in such a crucial race was unfair.

Others defended Hay, suggesting that such incidents are common in competitive racing.

GB was pushed , I’d be fuming too, one user said.

Wondered why the GB lad went straight for conflict, then realised he is Danny Mills son and it all made sense, the second user commented.

GB was clearly pushed the french bloke needs to be disqualified, the third user said.

Just disqualify this whole Olympics, another suggested.

Spirit of the Olympics alive and kicking. Too much self entitlement for me. Unfortunately the way of the world these days, someone wrote.
