Elon Musk wants to eliminate tariffs between europe and the united states to support freer trade
During a recent video interview with Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, Musk expressed hope for a zero-tariff future.
Elon Musk described his vision as one that supports a free-trade zone between Europe and North America.
He stated that both regions should aim for “no tariffs” and fewer restrictions on labor movement.
During the interview, Musk said: “At the end of the day, I hope it’s agreed that both Europe and the United States should move ideally, in my view, to a zero-tariff situation, effectively creating a free-trade zone between Europe and North America.”
“That’s what I hope occurs, and also more freedom of people to move between Europe and North America if they wish, if they wish to work in Europe or wish to work in America, they should be allowed to do so, in my view. So that has certainly been my advice to the president.” He added.
Additionaly, he wants people to be able to work and live freely between the US and Europe, if they choose.
According to Musk, this recommendation has already been shared with President Trump.
President trump remains committed to his global tariff strategy to protect american industries
On April 2, President Trump gave a speech in the White House Rose Garden for what he called “Liberation Day”.
He announced sweeping tariffs on goods from dozens of countries, including China, Canada, Mexico, and the European Union.
The baseline global tariff was set at 10 percent, with 25 percent levied on auto imports and more on others.
Trump argued that these tariffs would rebalance trade and restore American manufacturing.
He described it as a turning point for US industry and the return of the “American Dream”.
Musk disagrees with the president on this critical policy
Musk currently leads Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), yet he openly disagrees with the administration on trade with Europe.
Although aligned on some goals, Musk believes that restrictive tariffs will harm international collaboration and slow innovation.
Additionally, he called for openness, both in commerce and in workforce mobility across continents. This puts him at odds with the president’s confrontational economic approach.
Still, Musk continues to offer advice while championing his own global vision.
Elon Musk sees free trade and labor movement as essential to future prosperity and innovation
Musk’s stance goes beyond just trade policy—it reflects his broader vision of a connected, borderless future.
Additionally, he supports more cooperation between the US and Europe, not less.
According to him, reducing tariffs and encouraging labor mobility will help both regions thrive. He believes in global partnerships, especially in innovation, clean energy, and technology.
For Musk, “zero tariffs between the US and Europe” isn’t just economic—it’s strategic.
