While exploring the deep sea at midnight, archaeologists uncovered a hauntingly beautiful world teeming with enigmatic marine creatures.
The Adventurous Filmmaker
Scuba diver and filmmaker Barny Dillarstone embarked on a daring dive in Amed, Bali, in November last year.
Armed with his camera, he ventured into the ocean’s abyss to uncover its nocturnal inhabitants.
As a self-proclaimed ‘lover of all things that swim,’ Barny frequently shares content of his deep-sea adventures.
He searches for bizarre and rare marine life by dropping baited cameras into remote reefs across the Indo-Pacific in a chilling exploration.

Mysterious Creatures of the Deep Sea
Barny’s latest expedition, conducted under the cover of night, has left viewers both amazed and unnerved.
His footage captured a variety of unique marine creatures, some of which remain unknown to many.
Speaking to the camera, he expressed both excitement and trepidation about his midnight dive:
“It’s so fun just looking out into the darkness at night because there could be anything out there. We’re going to go crawling around to see what’s lurking on the reef when the lights go out.”
Deadly Encounters in the Dark
In the footage, Barny encountered a range of marine creatures, including blue-spotted stingrays, cornetfish with dazzling colors, and a monstrous lionfish.
However, the eerie atmosphere of being alone at midnight added an extra layer of intensity to his experience.
He described unsettling moments when he could see shadows drifting past him in the distance. It was a chilling reminder of the ocean’s vast and unpredictable nature.
One of the most dangerous encounters came in the form of a venomous tasseled scorpionfish, also known as Scorpaenopsis oxycephalus.
These creatures possess a powerful venom capable of paralyzing or even killing humans.
“Super camouflaged, I barely even saw him,” Barny remarked. “He is a big boy… you would not wanna get stung by him. That is one big, grumpy scorpionfish.”
Nearby, he also spotted a surgeonfish and a parrotfish hiding under a coral table, seemingly resting to avoid nighttime predators.

Searching for a Shipwreck
Barny’s exploration didn’t stop there. Exactly 24 hours later, he embarked on a second dive, this time in search of a boat wreck and more deep-sea oddities.
However, navigating in complete darkness proved to be a challenge.
“I think it’s out here somewhere, but if I’m honest, it’s completely black and I’ve got no idea,” he admitted. “And, I’m surrounded by stingrays.”
Despite the eerie surroundings, Barny soon discovered the wreckage and, along the way, encountered some truly mesmerizing creatures.
One standout was the ‘disco clam,’ a species known for its ability to produce a mesmerizing flashing light display—a stunning contrast to the dark ocean floor.

Terrifying Predators of the Deep Sea
The excitement soon turned into suspense when Barny came across a honeycomb moray eel emerging from the shipwreck’s skeletal remains.
These nocturnal predators, recognized by their distinctive black-spotted bodies, are known for their solitary nature and powerful bite.
The sudden appearance of the eel startled Barny and added to the intensity of his deep-sea adventure.
However, the most astonishing creature of all was the coconut octopus.
While its venomous bite can swiftly paralyze prey, it was not the danger but the octopus’s ‘famous skill’ that left viewers in awe.
Unlike most marine animals, the coconut octopus has an uncanny ability to ‘walk’ along the ocean floor using its tentacles—an almost surreal sight to behold.
“How weird!” Barny exclaimed, capturing the moment for his audience.

Viewers React to the Deep Sea Footage
The eerie yet fascinating footage quickly garnered reactions from Barny’s followers, with many expressing a mix of awe and fear.
One viewer commented: “You have to be really brave to do this because that is absolutely terrifying.”
Another wrote: “What a spooky video! Being down there solo at night must be a crazy experience, thanks for sharing that with us. I’d probably be freaked out half the time.”
A third added: “Diving solo? You’re game, mate! Coconut octopuses are cool, no doubt.”
Others simply found the experience overwhelming:
“Literally all my phobias in one video.”
“This is astounding.”
Barny Dillarstone’s midnight dive shows both its breathtaking beauty and spine-chilling unknowns.
