On April 16, 2023, Alexis woke up feeling uncertain about her marriage.
As the hours passed, she realized she could not go through with it.
At around 6 a.m., she told her fiancé, “I’m sorry, we can’t get married today.” He seemed confused but went back to sleep.
This moment was filled with anxiety for Alexis, as she worried about what everyone would think of her decision.
After she spoke to her fiancé, Alexis called her mother for support.
Her sister was also on the phone with family members, informing them that the wedding was off.
Alexis wanted to avoid being there when everyone woke up and discovered what had happened.
She asked her fiancé to get their four-year-old daughter so she could leave without causing a scene.
“I woke him up again and said ‘I need you to go get her’. He was super confused and I said ‘we’re not getting married today’.”
She faced mixed emotions after leaving.
Following her decision, Alexis took her daughter to her mother’s house.
She then moved back into her old apartment, feeling both relieved and scared.
Leaving the relationship was not easy for her.
Alexis and her fiancé had been together since they were 16 years old, and they got engaged in 2020.
She had been a stay-at-home mom during their relationship, which made her feel dependent on him.
After a few hours of uncertainty, Alexis found herself reflecting on her choice.
Around 3 p.m., she thought about how she would have already been married if she had gone through with the wedding. This led her to feel regret for a brief moment.
However, as time passed, she started to feel happy about her decision.
“I was a stay-at-home mum at the time so I had nothing. I didn’t have a job, I didn’t have money of my own. Everything was his,” she continued.
“I just couldn’t believe that I’d actually made the decision. I regretted it so badly for probably a while. Then it came to a point that I was really happy that I did it.”
The bride reveals her reason for leaving
Although Alexis loved her fiancé, she often felt she was pretending to be happy.
She realized that their relationship was not fulfilling her needs.
For Alexis, her daughter was a significant reason for leaving.
She understood that if she could not be happy herself, she could not provide a good environment for her child.
In her mind, the decision was not only about her happiness but also about her daughter’s well-being.
“[My daughter] was probably the biggest reason I left. It came to a point where if I couldn’t do it for her, then it just isn’t fair.
This is her only childhood and I’m in charge of it. That’s the best decision I’ve ever made even if it’s hard to accept,” she added.
“Every time I see him it’s a reminder of why I left. I always wonder sometimes when it’s late at night and I’m in bed and I’m lonely and I’m just like ‘oh I wish I just had my family back’.
“I think of only the good times and then I see him again and it just reminds me all over again all of the bad that outweighs all of the good. And that’s why I left.”
