Sandra and Brad, a married couple in their 40s, have accumulated a net worth of $1.3 million for their 25-year marriage

In a podcast of the show "I Will Teach You To Be Rich," the couple revealed they have four children and even spent $25,000 on a bedroom set.

The couple's financial challenges come from a combination of factors despite earning $70,000 a month.

Brad's income fluctuates due to his work in the mortgage industry, which is heavily influenced by the housing market.

Sandra's anxiety comes from Brad's choice to invest their life savings of $1 million in high-risk "fracking operations," which has been paying out $20,000 a month.

Sandra finds it difficult to feel secure when their income varies as Brad tends to compensate for lower-earning periods with risky investments.

These investments sometimes pay off, but they also increase the couple's financial losses.

Financial expert Ramit Sethi, a podcaster suggests that the couple's struggles may have come from their false perceptions of money.

He emphasizes the importance of adjusting their money identities with their current financial reality.

Sethi points out that Brad's unstable income should not be used as an excuse to avoid long-term financial planning or setting goals.

He also advises the couple to focus on high-value financial areas and to improve their communication and connection with each other.

Disagreement between the couple about financial expenses despite earning $70,000 a month

Sandra reveals that she always tracks their income and expenses using a detailed spreadsheet that covers 82 different spending categories.

This includes items like ballet and basketball camp for their kids, a Cancun trip, dog food, and their Costco membership.

During their more prosperous times, budgeting wasn't a concern for them. However, Brad's fluctuating income leads to "lean months," causing Sandra to question whether they can meet all their financial needs within their budget.

Brad expressed to Sethi that regardless of the amount of money in their bank account, Sandra tends to become upset.

He shared his frustration with having the same conversation repeatedly, whether they have a substantial amount of money or very little.

Brad feels that they are playing contrasting roles in their financial journey.
