An employee's gesture of goodwill caused a costly mistake for a woman.

A cafe employee's disastrous social media blunder has left a customer facing a staggering $2,000 bill.

Rhonda Deaver, a regular patron at Smith's Cafe in Kinston, North Carolina, fell victim to the employee's well-intentioned but ill-executed attempt to locate her after she left her card behind.

A customer left her credit card at the cafe after making a payment.

Last week on April 30th, Deaver visited the cafe after a doctor's appointment but accidentally left her card behind after making a payment.

When a bank representative called to notify her, she promptly turned around and headed back to the café.

However, during that time, an employee of the café took to their Facebook page in an attempt to locate the owner of the card.

The post, shared in the "Word of Mouth Kinston" group, read: "Hey guys, Mrs. Rhonda you've left your debit card here at the store. We have placed it in a secure location. Please, if you know her, let her know we have it and would love to make sure it's returned!"

Unfortunately, in the post, the employee uploaded two pictures of the credit card including the front and the back without concealing the images.

This meant that Deaver's personal details, including the sort code, bank account number, and security code, were exposed to the entire social media group.

Regrettably, the card was no longer "secure," and the employee's mistake resulted in consequences for Deaver.

By the time she was taken back her card, a significant number of charges had already been declined.

However, there were still numerous charges that went through before she could close the account associated with the card.

The total amount racked up on her card reached approximately $2,000 due to the online posting of her card details.

Deaver expressed her disbelief at the employee's actions and was worried that she might be held responsible for all those charges.

Living on a fixed income, she didn't have extra money each month to cover the bills that someone had charged to her card.

She emphasized the financial strain caused by the incident.

Meredith Radford from the Better Business Bureau advised against uploading photographs of debit or credit cards on social media, even if the numbers are blocked out, as there are ways for individuals to potentially reverse the editing and access the details.

She suggested that canceling the credit card and obtaining a new one from the respective company is a more viable solution than risking the exposure of personal financial information.
