Elon Musk has confirmed he will step down as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) after 130 days. His departure leaves the organization, which operates outside of the government, without a leader.

DOGE was always meant to be temporary, with Musk initially hoping to cut $2 trillion from federal spending by 2026. However, his early exit raises questions about the future of the department.

However, the organization has faced criticism over its junior workforce and Musk’s divisive leadership style.

While, complaints about Musk’s close relationship with President Donald Trump have also surfaced.

Despite only being a ‘special government employee,’ his limited work schedule aligns with his departure timeline.

When asked if DOGE will continue without Musk’s oversight, President Donald Trump indicated that its time may be coming to an end.

The POTUS explained in the press at the Oval Office: “Well, I can’t tell you that… I can say this that, a lot of the people that are working with DOGE are the secretaries and heads of various agencies – and they’ve learned a lot and they’re dealing with the DOGE people.”

“I think some of them may try and keep the DOGE people with them. But, at a certain point, I think it will end.”

While, Trump addressed the future of DOGE when asked if it would continue without Musk.

He stated that while some agency heads might retain DOGE staff, the department is likely nearing its end.

Musk responded to criticism while leading DOGE

Despite facing backlash and financial losses, Musk remained committed to his role. He defended DOGE’s mission, stating, “I’m just here trying to make the government more efficient, eliminate waste and fraud. So far, we’re making good progress.”

While, Trump also praised Musk’s effort. He called him a “very talented guy” and expressing a desire to keep him involved as long as possible.

Trump said: “At some point, he’s going to be going back. I’d keep him as long as I can keep him – he’s a very talented guy.

“You know I love very smart people. He’s very smart, and he’s done a good job.”

The president’s admiration for Musk has been evident, with previous jokes about firing cabinet members who opposed DOGE’s work.

The Future of DOGE after Elon Musk accounces stepping down

DOGE reports claim to have saved $140 billion from federal spending, equating to $869.57 per taxpayer. However, critics question the accuracy of these numbers.

With businessman Vivek Ramaswamy stepping away from DOGE before officially joining and Musk’s upcoming departure, the department’s future remains uncertain. Whether it can continue its ambitious cost-cutting goals without its key figures remains to be seen.
