New York City hit by earthquake: No major damage reported
New York City residents were stunned after an earthquake hit, leaving the ground shaking
Accroding to the United States Geological Survey, the residents of NYC were left shocked after they felt the ground shake this morning (April 5th) as a 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Lebanon, New Jersey.
As reported, the quake hit around 10:20 AM ET, causing tremors in both New Jersey and New York State.
After the earthquake hit NYC, reports emerged.
As of now (April 5th), no initial reports of damage have been received. The New York Fire Department is currently assessing the situation.
Officials provide updates on the incident on social media
Governor Kathy Hochul released a statement on social media (platform not mentioned for safety reasons) saying her team is evaluating any potential damage and will provide updates throughout the day.
She wrote: "We will update the public throughout the day."
'A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit west of Manhattan and has been felt throughout New York.' SHe added.
'My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day.'
The office of Mayor Eric Adams echoed these sentiments on social media (platform not mentioned for safety reasons), stating there are "no reports of major impacts at this time" but offered safety advice for residents in case of aftershocks.
After the ground shook in Manhattan, leaving locals baffled, many turned to X to share their shock.
One person said: I’m being told it was wide spread and was felt in Jersey as well as Boston.
A second wrote: I'm in Syracuse, NY and felt that!!
While a third commented: That is a small one. Yea, I'm in California and yes they still scare me. The Loma Prieata earthquake in 1989 scarred me for life. That one was 7.1 and there was a lot of destruction.
Someone else said: Earthquake s happening across the globe over the past couple days. Hope everyone stays safe.
Another added: In Texas in a Zoom meeting with colleagues from NY. Seeing their reaction made me worried. Their shock and seeing them trying to digest what was happening was felt. Hope everyone is OK.
