Authorities are investigating a billion-dollar energy company for its potential involvement in causing the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
Investigation launched against energy company linked to Los Angeles wildfires
A major energy company, Edison International, is facing an investigation related to the recent wildfires in Los Angeles.
The company’s subsidiary, Southern California Edison (SCE), is under investigation.
Authorities are examining its possible connection to the Hurst Fire.
The investigation began after SCE reported that their electrical grid had a short circuit on the evening of January 7.
This event coincided with the outbreak of the Hurst Fire, which has burned approximately 800 acres.
However, it remains unclear if the electrical issue occurred before or after the fire started.
According to SCE, the fire was first reported at around 10:10 PM on the same day.
Just one minute later, at 10:11 PM, the Eagle Rock-Sylmar 220 kV circuit experienced a relay.
A downed power line was later discovered near a tower associated with that circuit.
The company stated that they do not know if the damage to the power line happened before or after the fire began.
Death toll and community impact after Los Angeles wildfire outbreak
The wildfires in Los Angeles have had a devastating impact on the community.
The death toll has risen to 24, with many residents suffering the loss of their homes.
Among the fatalities, eight were linked to the Palisades fire, while 16 were attributed to the Eaton fire.
These tragic events have left families in mourning and communities in chaos.
Thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the fires, and many are still without power.
As of January 12, more than 62,000 customers were still experiencing power outages.
The restoration process is slow, as severe damage and access restrictions in the impacted areas have complicated efforts.
Energy company responds to the investigation
In light of the ongoing investigation and the impact of the fires, Edison International has announced a financial contribution of $1 million.
This money will go to community-based organizations to support relief efforts for those affected by the wildfires.
Pedro J. Pizarro is the president and CEO of Edison International.
He expressed gratitude for the contributions from other companies helping the community during this crisis.
“We are proud to support nonprofits that provide critical services to our customers and employees, and we are grateful for the contributions from other Southern California companies who have stepped up to support our communities during this difficult time,”
“Their collective efforts demonstrate the strength and resilience of our region, and we are honored to stand alongside them in providing aid and support to those in need.”
