Decaying human feet have been washing ashore, leaving authorities and the public baffled. However, after a decade of investigation, the mystery has finally been solved.

However, experts have now revealed a much simpler and sadder truth behind these grim discoveries.
The initial incident took place in August 2007 when a young girl on Jedediah Island, British Columbia, stumbled upon a washed-up sneaker.
Inside the shoe was a decomposing right foot. Just six days later, another sneaker containing a different right foot was found on Gabriola Island, about 30 miles away.
The regional coroner confirmed that both feet had separated from their bodies naturally through decomposition while in the water.
Since that first discovery, a total of 24 feet have been found on various beaches between 2007 and 2023, with the latest one appearing in July 2023 on Gonzales Beach in Victoria, British Columbia.
The mystery surrounding these feet had persisted for years, causing speculation and fear among the public.
Unravel the secret behind decaying human feet appearing on Salish Sea shores.
Fortunately, coroner Barb McLintock finally provided an explanation to put these speculations to rest.
Contrary to the sensational theories, the truth was much simpler and rooted in advancements in running shoe technology.
McLintock explained that the floating ability of modern running shoes allowed them to stay afloat instead of sinking to the ocean floor like older shoe models.
As a result, when human remains are consumed by marine creatures, the feet, protected by the buoyant shoes, separate and eventually resurface, washing ashore.
Although the discoveries are undoubtedly distressing, the feet are believed to have come from individuals who met tragic fates such as accidents or suicides, with their bodies sinking to the depths of the sea.
The identification of the feet through DNA analysis has provided closure to families who had lost loved ones under such circumstances.
