A massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, sending shockwaves across neighboring regions.
The impact caused widespread tremors, leading to structural damage in Bangkok, Thailand.
Among the destruction, a high-rise building under construction collapsed entirely, leaving many workers unaccounted for.
Building crumbles after violent tremors
The earthquake hit Myanmar, causing buildings to shake across the country.
In Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, an unfinished skyscraper struggled against the tremors. Moments later, the structure gave way and crumbled to the ground.
Onlookers captured terrifying footage of the collapse. The video shows people running away as the massive structure turns into rubble. Dust and debris filled the air as the disaster unfolded.
Search for missing workers underway
Authorities are working to determine how many people were inside the collapsed building.’
Bangkok police confirmed they are responding to the incident but do not yet have exact numbers.
Reports indicate that 43 construction workers are missing. Seven individuals managed to escape.
The National Institute for Emergency Medicine shared the update on social media.
Worapat Sukthai, deputy police chief of Bang Sue district, described the situation. “When I arrived to inspect the site, I heard people calling for help, saying ‘help me,'” he said.
Earthquake shakes Bangkok and beyond
The quake struck Bangkok at approximately 1:30 PM local time on March 28. Alarms rang out across the city as buildings swayed, forcing evacuations.
In Myanmar, the earthquake caused additional destruction. The Ava Bridge collapsed, and many homes and religious shrines suffered damage.
Another viral video captured a rooftop pool in Bangkok overflowing as the building beneath it rocked violently.
Myanmar’s Fire Services Department has begun search and rescue efforts. An official told Reuters, “We have started the search and are checking for casualties and damage. So far, we have no information yet.”
Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention reported that the earthquake was felt across nearly all regions of the country.
Social media reaction
Footage captures building collapse after 7.7 magnitude earthquake, going viral on social media and leaving viewers stunned and concerned about the disaster’s consequences.
One person said: Imagine spending months building ts just for it to fall and kill 3 people.
A second wrote: rip to all the people that worked at the building that’s heartbreaking and scary my respect to those that lost family members or friends [weep]
While a third commented: Omg reminds me of 911….horror!!
Another added: well that wasn’t earthquake prepared damn.
Someone else said : Nature acting to stop big buildings
As prone as Thailand is to earthquakes, this should not have happened. There should’ve been measures in place for that not to fall down like that! Horrific!! Someone else said.
Another added: This is how fragile life really is it can collapse in a moment.
Lack of earthquake-proof structures raises concerns
The U.S. Geological Survey and Germany’s GFZ Centre for Geosciences confirmed the earthquake’s magnitude and impact.
The initial quake struck at a depth of 6.2 miles underground. Twelve minutes later, a second tremor followed, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale.
Experts believe Thailand’s limited history of earthquakes contributed to the collapse. Unlike other countries in active seismic zones, many buildings in Thailand are not designed to withstand strong tremors.
Officials continue to assess the full extent of the damage in both Myanmar and Thailand. Search and rescue teams remain on-site, hoping to locate missing workers.
The devastating earthquake highlights the need for improved structural standards in regions not typically affected by seismic activity.
As authorities investigate, the focus remains on saving lives and ensuring safety in the aftermath of this disaster.
