At this year’s Hay Festival, former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci shared explosive comments.

He claimed Elon Musk privately holds little respect for Donald Trump, calling him “an idiot.”

Scaramucci pointed to a series of inflammatory posts made by Musk on X, formerly Twitter.

One post labeled Trump trade advisor Peter Navarro “dumb as a box of rocks.” Musk even added a follow-up: “Apologies to the box of rocks.”

Navarro is widely known for his close alignment with Trump’s trade views.

Scaramucci argued Musk’s attack on Navarro was effectively a direct jab at Trump himself. “This is Navarro’s trade policy. This is Donald Trump’s trade policy,” he said. “You see, he thinks he’s an idiot.”

Musk’s Trump role showed influence and division

Though Elon Musk and Donald Trump appeared united in recent months, their history has been far more complicated.

Their public friendliness surprised many political observers given their conflicting past.

Musk briefly served as head of the Trump-created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The post was symbolic but short-lived, highlighting Musk’s influence and eventual misalignment with Trump’s political vision.

At the time, Musk’s mother even praised their friendship.

But within months, Musk distanced himself from political life to address what he called a “code red situation” at Tesla.

Analysts say Musk’s political exit signals Trump fallout

Analysts say the Musk-Trump split has been building. Some cite Musk’s failure to help Trump sway the Wisconsin Supreme Court vote as a key turning point.

Others point to Musk’s increasingly vocal opposition to Trump’s trade plans. The Tesla CEO warned that Trump’s tariff agenda could devastate the U.S. automotive industry.

Musk’s criticism marked a stark break from his earlier praise.

Many believe his silence about Trump on social media since leaving DOGE signals the end of their alliance.

Elon Musk’s tweet mocking Peter Navarro didn’t go unnoticed. Social media users immediately interpreted it as a dig at Trump.

One user joked, “So Musk is out here roasting Trump’s brain trust and expecting no one to notice?” Another added, “He went from First Buddy to First Backstabber real quick.”

Musk’s decision to ridicule Trump’s close aide sparked broader questions about his political loyalty and motivations.

Anthony Scaramucci’s claim that Elon Musk called Trump “an idiot” highlights a growing divide in conservative tech and political circles. What once seemed like a strong alliance now appears to be broken.

Musk’s sarcastic online attacks, his policy criticisms, and his withdrawal from government all suggest a calculated effort to separate from Trump.

Whether driven by business, ideology, or both, the rift between them seems to be widening.

As Musk turns his attention back to Tesla, it’s increasingly clear his days as Trump’s political ally are over.
