Gen Z has sparked debate after canceling skinny jeans and suggesting an alternative style to wear

Tuesday, 26/09/2023, 11:58 (GMT+7)

Gen Z has canceled skinny jeans and proposed an alternative fashion trend.

Fashion trends often cycle through different eras, with each decade bringing its unique styles, from the groovy bootcut flares of the 70s to the iconic shoulder pads of the 80s.

However, one particular clothing item has caused a generational divide.

Individuals born between 1981 and 1996 not only developed an affinity for skinny jeans during the Britpop era but also paired them with side fringes and Motorola flip phones.

Many of them likely had a reliable pair of these slim-fit jeans that accompanied them through their teenage and young adult years.

In contrast, some members of Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, have seemingly canceled the super-skinny denim trend and proposed an alternative style to embrace instead.

Gen Z individuals have showcased their style transformations by purging their wardrobes of these once-beloved jeans.

One TikTok user, @momohkd, humorously shared "3 ways" to style these figure-hugging jeans.

Her first piece of advice was to "Throw them out," humorously tossing the black skinny jeans into a trash bin. The second "styling" suggestion was to "burn them," and the third recommended, "Cut them up and make something else."

Unsurprisingly, Millennials were less than thrilled to hear that their cherished wardrobe staple was no longer in vogue."

One person said: I think all styles of jeans should be an option all the time because not everyone looks good in the same kind of jeans!

A second wrote: I used to love skinny jeans. But now I can't stand Them. Not cause they Are tight. But I can't stand denim or denim-like fabric, it gives me chills. I need something soft on My whole body.

A third commented: I never got into skinny jeans. I think I have one pair of dark ones for when I wear knee or thigh-high boots but that’s the only time I’ll wear them. I’ve been wearing flares and bootcuts since junior high and wide leg before that.

Someone else said: I spent ages not wearing skinny jeans because they weren't "in" even though the styles that are in absolutely do not suit me. I also started parting my hair in the middle because side partings are apparently out too. I ended up feeling awful and just didn't look like myself. Recently (since my mam died unexpectedly nearly 2 months ago) I've decided life is too short and that I don't GAF anymore what anyone thinks looks good. I put my skinny jeans back on and put a deep part back in my hair and I've felt so much better since.

Another disagreed: Nope I live in skinny jeans at the end of the day if you feel comfortable you wear them. Not going to listen to Gen Z I’m Gen x I’ll wear what I want.

I love my skinny jeans, baggy pants don't suit me, Skinny jeans and leggings suit me better than any other pants. Another added.

The rest of the internet happily joined in on the skinny jeans criticism.

Someone quipped: 'I agree, skinny jeans should be canceled; they touched me all over my bottom when I was in high school.'

Another declared, 'Time to change the wardrobe.'

Someone complained: 'Skinny jeans are blooming awful, especially if you've slim legs but a big tummy or/& bust. You end up looking like a toffee apple on a stick as the body silhouette is so off, really unflattering. For balance & nice lines for this shape'.

Another opinion stated: 'Skinny jeans (in my opinion) never looked good on anyone, even those with stunning figures.'

Other members of Gen Z have also chimed in, suggesting alternative clothing styles for former skinny jeans enthusiasts looking to refresh their fashion choices.
