A man from Twitter has recently shared his experience of fasting for 30 days, during which he consumed only water.
This decision to avoid all food for such a long time has raised questions about the effects it had on his body.
The man, known by his Twitter handle @maru.eth, documented his journey and the challenges he faced throughout the month.
Beginning the challenge
On December 26, he announced his plan to fast, stating that he would only drink water and take electrolytes.
He weighed 97.85 kg (216 lbs) and stood six feet four inches tall at the start of his journey.
He aimed for a total of 1,000 hours, which is about 42 days. However, he ended the fast after 30 days.
The tough first days
The first few days of the fast were particularly difficult.
He described the first 72 hours as the hardest because his body was signaling for food.
“The first 72h are the toughest because your body is constantly signaling you to eat. it gets way easier after that initial period,” he wrote.
Despite this, he noted that it became easier after the initial period.
During the first week, he lost a significant amount of weight, dropping to 92 kg.
“Spending NYE without any yummy snacks or drinks was tough, but I made it, I’m alive. slept pretty well and feeling good overall, but I can’t shake off the feeling that this fast feels considerably different than my other ones… somethings up and I’m not exactly sure what,” he explained.
Coping with hunger
Throughout the fast, he experienced various physical changes.
He reported that he lost about 300 grams each day while keeping his sodium intake steady.
“I lose approximately 300g each day if I keep my sodium intake constant.
I still lost actual fat but you don’t see that on the scale because of increased water retention,” he explained in a follow-up post.
Despite losing fat, he noticed that water retention made it hard to see a difference on the scale.
He mentioned that his sleep was generally good, but mornings were often tough due to hunger.
Effects on digestion
One interesting aspect of his fast was how it affected his digestion.
After 12 days without food, he finally had a bowel movement.
He described his stool as “very long” and noted that there was still residue even after such a long time without eating.
This situation raised questions about how fasting impacts the digestive system.
Completing the fast
After 30 days, he weighed 82.95 kg, marking a total weight loss of 15 kg (about 33 lbs).
He expressed pride in completing the challenge, even though he did not reach his original goal of 42 days.
“I did this to challenge myself and for no other reason! Never fasting for so long ever again,” he stated in his final update.
