On social media, many viewers were stunned after a viral video showed a restaurant offering diners discounts if they could fit their bodies through spaces of varying widths.
A thailand restaurant offers diners up to 20 percent off if they can fit through narrow bars
On social media, a restaurant in Thailand has gone viral—and not for the right reasons.
The “skinny discount” restaurant, known as Chiang Mai Breakfast World, is under fire. It recently launched a controversial pricing scheme.
The promotion offers discounts based on a customer’s ability to squeeze through color-coded bars of decreasing widths.
Videos of the practice, posted by travel influencers Amina (@amonthego) and Alex (@alexwandersyt), and quickly went viral on social media.
Additionally, the video sparked igniting a fierce debate over body image, discrimination, and humor in marketing.
Customers are challenged to fit through narrow spaces to earn discounts on their meals
According to the footage, the restaurant has installed five vertical “skinny discount” bars near the entrance. Each bar corresponds to a discount level:
– 20% off for the smallest, tightest space
– 15% off for the next narrowest
– 10% and 5% off for medium-width bars
– No discount if a customer can only pass through the widest opening
One clip shows a lanky male diner attempting to wriggle his way through the 15% discount space while his friends laugh and shout mock encouragement.
“You need some butter,” one jokes as the man struggles and ultimately fails to fit.
He later settles for the 5% discount space, panting and defeated but managing to find humor in the situation.
“It’s better than nothing, I suppose,” he concedes.
Social media reaction
Social media users criticize the discount system as body-shaming and harmful to mental health
Online backlash was swift, with many viewers calling the skinny discount restaurant policy harmful and discriminatory toward plus-sized individuals.
One person said: Wouldn’t eat there. That’s really discriminating
A second wrote: What’s wrong with you? This can promote eating disorders. Let people enjoy their food and have a healthy weigh
Another added: This is so wrong.
Someone said: Welcome back, fat shaming. You were sorely, sorely missed.
Some diners find the skinny discount game funny
Despite the criticism, some commenters found the concept amusing and even innovative. While, someone also say it adds playful energy to the experience.
Someone said: We need this across all places,
Another added: In America, this place would get sued, sadly.
Someone else said: And a great idea to feed the skinny and help the the fat ones not to gain more!
A few even suggested that this body-based pricing model could be applied to other sectors, such as airlines. Debates over space and comfort for plus-sized passengers have intensified in recent years.
In short, what may seem like a fun game to some is deeply hurtful to others. It can be especially damaging to mental health for those struggling with body confidence or eating disorders.
