If you've noticed that your once-plush white pillows have turned an alarming shade of yellow, don't worry. A cleaning expert has devised a simple and cost-effective method to reverse this damage, and it will cost you only 4p.

Here's how you can go about it:

A concerned individual sought advice on a dedicated Facebook cleaning page, asking,  'Hi, how does everyone remove yellow stains from their pillows, mine is covered in them.

'I've tried using baking soda and white vinegar but the stains are still there. What else can I try?'

They mentioned trying baking soda and white vinegar but found that the stains still persisted.

They also explained the reasons why pillows change color. People with oily hair or those who go to bed with wet or damp hair might also find unsightly yellow stains on their pillows. The use of certain types of makeup and skincare products can also contribute to these stains.

Therefore, it's crucial to address any yellowing as soon as you notice it. Experts recommend washing your pillows at least twice a year.

If you're short on time, there's a budget-friendly and effective solution that won't break the bank and will leave your pillows looking as good as new.

Several Facebook users suggested a way to resolve it. They recommended using a dishwasher tablet as a 'no-effort hack' that can eliminate unsightly discoloration in just one wash.

One person said: Pillows are never the same after a wash and are a devil to dry. Pillow protectors are the best bet, if you get a couple for each pillow they can just be washed weekly with your cases.

A second wrote: Even though I use pillow protectors and pillowcases I wash our pillows every week on a quick wash and tumble dry for ten minutes or dry on the washing line. Obviously, they're not feathers! Nothing like fresh bedding, if I could and money was no object that is my luxury clean bedding every day.

A third wrote: We always put our pillows in the dishwasher but the cutlery sounds terrible spinning around in the washing machine.

The appeal of this tip lies in its cost-effectiveness. Each dishwasher cycle costs only four pence.

You can purchase a pack of 30 dishwasher tablets at Asda for just £1.34, which amounts to only 4p per tablet. In contrast, Sainsbury's own-brand dishwasher tablets come in at £3.00 for a pack of 30, making it 10p peruse. Tesco's all-in-one dishwasher tablets, sold in packs of 40 for £3.90, cost 9p per tablet.

Dishwasher tablets not only deliver efficient cleaning but are also readily available in most households.

However, some cleaning advice websites caution against using dishwasher tablets for washing machine cleaning.
