The USA Gymnastics Federation accused the court of serious errors in Jordan Chiles’ Olympic medal fight, affecting her results.
The 2024 Paris Olympics have been filled with excitement, triumphs, and controversies.
One of the most talked-about incidents involves American gymnast Jordan Chiles and her fight for an Olympic medal.
The situation has attracted a lot of attention.
USA slams court over “astonishing mistakes” in Jordan Chiles’ Olympic medal fight
The United States Gymnastics Federation released a strong statement accusing the court of serious mistakes affecting Chiles’ performance.
The dispute over Chiles’ bronze medal took a dramatic turn when the US Olympic Committee (USOPC) accused CAS of crucial errors in communication and procedural missteps.
CAS email error leads to delayed response and contested decision by USOPC
Reports indicate that CAS mistakenly sent emails to incorrect addresses at the USOPC and USA Gymnastics.
This mistake caused a delayed response, giving the American organizations inadequate time to prepare a defense.
“The USOPC strongly contests the CAS decision due to significant procedural errors.
From August 6-9, CAS sent crucial communications to incorrect email addresses at USOPC and USAG.
This error was only corrected on August 9—three days after filing, two days past the deadline for objections, and less than 24 hours before the hearing,” the statement said.
This communication breakdown resulted in the decision that Romania’s Ana Barbosu would replace Chiles in the gymnastics floor final.
CAS responded to the USOPC’s accusations
They stated that there were no conflicts of interest within the panel deciding Chiles’ medal.
Questions arose when it was revealed that panel chairman Hamid G. Gharavi had previous professional ties with the Romanian government.
This raised concerns about potential biases in the decision.
“New evidence supports our objections, revealing administrative errors by FIG and mishandlings by CAS.
“These crucial details, which couldn’t be raised during the hasty hearing, highlight our lack of a fair chance to present our case effectively,” USA Olympic Committee emphasized.
The USOPC remains firm in its position, insisting that significant procedural errors occurred.
They argue that CAS and the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) mishandled the situation, depriving them of a fair chance to present their case.
USA Gymnastics expressed devastation and intends to challenge the decision by appealing to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland.
Jordan Chiles, while silent, received backing from her team, notably Simone Biles.
‘Sending you so much love Jordan. Keep your chin up Olympic champ! We love you!’ Simone Biles wrote.
USOPC has committed to appealing the decision in Jordan Chiles’ Olympic medal fight.
They want to ensure Jordan Chiles receives the recognition they believe she deserves.
“Given these circumstances, we are committed to pursuing an appeal to ensure Jordan Chiles receives the recognition she deserves,” SA Olympic Committee
Barbosu, who will receive bronze on Friday in Bucharest, sent Chiles an Instagram message.
Initially, Barbosu thought she won the bronze, but Chiles’ score was revised after a successful appeal.
This change moved Barbosu and her teammate to fourth and fifth place. Romania’s appeal was based on procedural timing issues.
‘Sabrina [Maneca-Voinea], Jordan, my thoughts are with you. I know what you are feeling because I’ve been through the same.
But I know you’ll come back stronger. I hope from deep of my heart that at the next Olympics, all three of us will share [the] same podium.
That is my true dream!”
‘I wanted to end this edition of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 in the spirit of Olympism, the true value of the world,” Barbosu wrote.
