In June 2019, Shanda was referred to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in New Jersey for treatment by their advanced pulmonary care team. Then, she was diagnosed with Chronic Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (CHP), due to her exposure to mold in her apartment

Dr. Shanda Johnson began experiencing unusual and prolonged breathing difficulties, even though her asthma had been managed.

According to the American Lung Association, Chronic Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis develops after repeated or sustained exposure to small quantities of an allergen. Its symptoms include persistent shortness of breath, fatigue, a lasting cough that can extend for weeks or months, and progressive weight loss.

Shanda is in desperate need of a lung transplant to extend her life; otherwise, she will not survive.

Shanda, a nurse practitioner, professor, and mother, is known for her generosity, as indicated on her GoFundMe page, which it mentions her willingness to help others financially.

Despite being a single mother with a college student and a professor at New Jersey University, Shanda's family has decided that it's her turn to receive care. Her twin brother, Shawn, retired from the police department to become her full-time caregiver.

Throughout her hospital stays, Shanda continued working for the university. However, her condition deteriorated to the point where she now permanently resides in the hospital and requires a high oxygen flow.

A GoFundMe campaign was initiated to help Shanda afford the major surgery she needed.

Now, until she undergoes a transplant, she relies on a high oxygen supply. Her supporters are remaining hopeful, although there is no guarantee of finding a lung match for Shanda.
