Jenna Gani, a 28-year-old from South Manchester, dedicates her time outside her full-time job to ensure that front-line hospital staff who are fasting have access to nourishing meals during their shifts.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan, a month-long period of fasting observed by Muslims, poses a challenge for healthcare professionals who often struggle to break their fast while on duty.

Recognizing this difficulty, Jenna actively participates in a community project called Hospital Iftars, which was established in 2018.

The initiative aims to support hospital workers by providing free meals from local restaurants in Manchester, including Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester Royal Infirmary, Salford Royal, and Bolton.

After completing her nine-to-five job, she spends an additional two hours leading one of the hospital sites.

Her responsibilities include advertising the project, coordinating with local food businesses for donations, planning meal distributions, and raising awareness about the challenges faced by those who are fasting and working.

In an interview, Jenna emphasized the importance of community and inclusivity during Ramadan.

She clarified some misconceptions surrounding the observance, clarifying that Muslims abstain from both food and drink, including water, during daylight hours.

Through her involvement with Hospital Iftars, she strives not only to provide food but also to foster a sense of belonging and support for those fasting.

The impact of Hospital Iftars has been significant, as it brings together individuals from diverse backgrounds, both Muslim and non-Muslim, who view the project as a life-changing and community-building endeavor.

Hospital staff members have expressed their gratitude for the initiative, highlighting the importance of having a supportive community during the fasting period.

The meals provided by Hospital Iftars offer them a much-needed break and moments of joy amidst their busy and often stressful schedules.

Jenna's main aim for Hospital Iftars is to help more people in hospitals across the country.

To do this, they need more volunteers, more donations, and partnerships with local groups.

By spreading the word and getting support, Jenna and the Hospital Iftars team want to make sure the project keeps going and gets bigger.
