On social media, many viewers were stunned after a viral video showed a woman being asked to tip an airport worker for checking her bag.
A TikToker has sparked debate over tipping culture after claiming an airport worker asked her for a tip.
On TikTok, a woman shared a video of this incident, which gained attention
The incident raises questions about the expectations surrounding tips in the service industry.
Tipping culture in the US vs. UK
Tipping is more common in the US than in other countries, like the UK. In the UK, tips are generally reserved for certain roles, such as waitstaff. For example, a Domino’s delivery driver is not typically tipped in the UK as they are in the US.
Addysen Drake (@addydrake98) shared her views on tipping culture in a recent TikTok video. She believes tipping has “gotten out of hand,” especially after her recent experience at the airport.
A woman was asked to tip an airport worker for checking her bag.
On social media, a user named @addydrake98 shared her airport experience.
In her video, Addysen explained that she works in the service industry. She understands the importance of tips for many workers. However, she was taken aback when an airport employee requested a tip for checking her luggage.
She said, “Tell me why when I get to the airport, after paying $400 for a flight, I’m also paying for my $35 checked bag. The guy says to me: ‘OK, you have to pay in credit card, but you can tip in cash.'”
Addysen reacted with shock. She showed her incredulous expression at the airport worker’s request.
When she pulled out her credit card, the employee handed her an iPad screen, asking, “What would you like to leave for tip?”
Addysen shared her shock about the incident.
Addysen was stunned. She sarcastically asked “what?” several times in her TikTok video. She added, “And keep in mind, he was a total f*****g douchebag to me. He was so rude. What am I tipping that man for? What do we pay all this money for?”
The video has garnered attention and sparked debate on social media.
Viewers have shared mixed reactions in the comments.
Many viewers also expressed their shock about the incident, while others criticized Addysen, suggesting that she should tip for the service.
On person said: Same… I was even given his cash ap. He was literally standing by me making sure I tipped after being very helpful and volunteering to help us go in the airport.
A second wrote: You ALWAYS tip skycap. If you don’t wanna tip, go inside. This is why nobody wants to wait on foreigners, especially in restaurants.
While a third commented: The tipping culture is being encouraged by employers so they dont have to give a decent wage just like charities being encouraged by Government to hide their failures
Another added: Absolutely tipping has got way too much out of hand I fail to understand why people expect to get tipped for just doing their job tipping has to be one’s choice that too for exceptional service not for someone simply doing their job
An airline employee also weighed in, saying, “If this was an agent at the TKT counter, big no-no. Curbside workers are contracted but shouldn’t be asking.”
In response, Addysen admitted, “I didn’t know that before I made the video, and it blew up lol, but I’ve read them all so I get it now.”
Addysen’s experience highlights the confusion and debate surrounding tipping culture in the US.
