The Whittakers’ lives have fascinated many since Mark Laita began his project in 2020.
The family’s tale changed dramatically when they found out that Larry, who everyone thought had passed away, was still alive.
On March 21, Laita announced on his YouTube channel, Soft White Underbelly, that Larry had died from a heart attack.
A few days later, Laita posted a video called “The Death of Larry Whittaker.”
In the video, Larry talks about his supposed “death” while sitting on his porch, alive and well.
In this video, released on March 25, Larry revealed that he had only recently learned about his reported death through a video.
When asked if he had heard about the reports of his death, Larry responded that he had just found out the night before.
Laita revealed that he gave $1,000 to BJ, Larry’s daughter, for funeral costs that never happened.
Laita confronted BJ about the deception, and she expressed remorse.
She admitted that she was not proud of her actions and confessed that the fraud was related to her drug addiction.
BJ said, “I’m not proud of what I’ve done, I’m not,” and acknowledged that she should not have committed the fraud.
She also mentioned that she was seeking help for her addiction.”
Whittaker family history of intermarriage.
The Whittaker family, from Odd, West Virginia, has a complex history of intermarriage.
This pattern of marrying within the family started with identical twins Henry and John, whose descendants married each other.
Harry and his wife Sally had seven children, one of whom was John Isom Whittaker, born in 1882.
John married his first cousin Ada Rigg, and they had nine children together, including their daughter Gracie Irene Whittaker, born in 1920.
Gracie later married her double cousin, John Emory Whittaker, in 1935.
This union, sharing both sets of grandparents, resulted in 15 children, including Larry.
Many of the children born from these inbred unions suffered severe disabilities.
