Content creator filmed herself swimming alone in sea at night during intense thunderstorm
Recently, 21-year-old content creator Talia Schreiber faced heavy criticism.
She posted a video of herself swimming in the sea at night during a severe thunderstorm.
The footage quickly caught attention on social media, with many viewers branding her actions as “one of the dumbest things” they had ever seen.
Talia, currently an Economics major at the University of California, Santa Barbara, was on a summer travel trip in South America.
While camping at Cabo San Juan beach in Colombia’s Tayrona National Natural Park, she took a late-night swim amidst the storm.
In her video, she can be seen splashing in the water, smiling at the camera, while thunder rumbles and lightning flashes.
Talia was with three other travelers when she decided to go for a late-night swim in the sea.
After she shared the video of her swim, it got tens of thousands of views.
Many people on social media quickly criticized her, calling it one of the “dumbest things” they had ever seen, pointing out the dangers.
Reflecting on what she did, Talia admitted that it might not have been very responsible, but she said she was “willing to take the risk” during her trip.
Experts warn of the dangers of swimming during thunderstorms.
Experts warn that swimming in adverse weather conditions, especially during thunderstorms, is highly dangerous.
The British Red Cross advises against being in the water when thunder is present, as water conducts electricity.
They stress that people should exit any body of water immediately if they hear thunder.
“If you hear thunder or lightning, then immediately exit any body of water; this includes swimming outdoors in a lake, river, or the sea or an activity like kayaking.
If you are in a boat or vessel, you should return to shore as soon as possible,” they stated.
Furthermore, The Met Office also speaks out on the matter.
They said: “If you’re outside during a thunderstorm, you should avoid water and find a safe, low-lying, open area away from trees, poles, and metal objects.
You should also avoid activities like boating, fishing, or golf.”
Despite the criticism, the content creator expressed no regrets about her decision.
She believes she assessed the risks correctly and felt that the storm was not as severe as it appeared.
“I guess swimming in a storm isn’t the most responsible thing to do, but the lightning was pretty far away, and storms are common in Colombia,” she stated.
Talia mentioned that she swam for about an hour and felt at peace during the experience.
She described the sounds of the waves and the storm as beautiful, allowing her to connect deeply with nature.
“It felt like everything in my life was coming together, and I was just very grateful to be alive,” she reflected.
While many social media users criticized her, Talia remained steadfast in her beliefs.
She argued that experiences like hers are essential for personal growth and exploration.
“Sometimes you just need to take risks to feel those powerful emotions and be present in the moment,” she emphasized.
For Talia, swimming during the storm was not just about adventure; it was also a way to express her freedom and adventurous spirit.
Having traveled to 20 countries, she feels that each journey offers valuable lessons.
Despite the backlash, Talia respects differing opinions and insists that such feedback will not alter her future choices.
