Her lawyer, Solange Marchignoli, argued that this does not definitively prove Cardia’s guilt.
She pointed out that further investigation is needed to see if the DNA is a single profile or a mixed one.
Solange Marchignoli said: “From a scientific point of view, the DNA stain deserves further investigation.
“We are waiting to know if it is a mixed or single profile: if the profile is single, it means that it is only Cardia’s and she put it there, so in this case we would go to trial,
but if, as expected, the profile is mixed, it means that the DNA found on the statue also contains Gisella’s DNA, which we expect because she used the statuette, kissed it and handled it.”

Meanwhile, the Diocese of Civita Castellana conducted its own investigation.
They ruled that the events surrounding the statue were “non-supernatural.”
A commission of experts, including a Mariologist, theologian, and psychologist, looked into the claims.
After careful consideration, they declared that there was no evidence of miraculous activity related to the statue.
Bishop Marco Salvi stated: “After an appropriate period of careful discernment, having listened to the testimonies and made use of a commission of experts, we decree the events in question to be non-supernatural.”
This ruling has added to the controversy as supporters of Cardia continue to defend her actions.

Despite the results of the investigation, Cardia maintains her belief in the statute’s powers.
Her supporters argue that her deep faith should not be questioned.
They believe that the DNA results do not negate the spiritual experiences she and others claim to have had.
