A dedicated employee recently shared a shocking exchange with his boss that left him frustrated and ready to quit.
The man, who had been assigned all night shifts for a week, revealed the conversation in which his manager admitted the decision was based on his willingness to “complain the least.”
Employee questions unfair night shift assignments
The issue began when the employee noticed he was scheduled for night shifts every day of the week. Confused, he reached out to his manager via text.
“Hi, just a quick question,” the employee wrote. “I seemed to have been put on the late shift for every single night this week?”
@ben.askins This boss is absolutely terrible, just a complete inability to prioritise, and even more a complete lack of logic. #worstboss #badbosses #funny #redflags
In response, the manager confessed: “Yeah, sorry about that. I know no one wants to do that shift, and I knew you would complain the least if I gave them to you.”
Manager defends the decision, employee pushes back
Shocked by the explanation, the employee suggested a fairer solution. “That doesn’t make sense. Can’t we just split the last shifts between the three of us like usual?” he asked.
The manager refused, citing past complaints from another team member.
“Last time I put Jamie on the late shift, he just complained so much. Honestly, I can’t be bothered to deal with that,” the boss said.
Feeling frustrated, the employee pointed out the unfair treatment. “So I’m being punished because I don’t complain as much?” he asked.
The manager attempted to justify the decision as a compliment. “It is a compliment, mate! You are way less low maintenance, which is a good thing,” the boss claimed.
Employee stands firm, threatens to quit
Unimpressed, the employee expressed his frustration. “This is honestly bull”.
You realize you are basically incentivizing me to be more unhelpful?” he replied.
The manager, seemingly defensive, called the response “very disappointing.” However, the employee made it clear he wouldn’t tolerate the unfair treatment. “If you make me do this, I will quit,” he warned.
Finally, the manager relented. “Fine, I will change it,” he said.
Public reaction to the exchange
British career expert Ben Askins shared the exchange in a video, calling the manager’s behavior “pathetic.”
He criticized the boss, stating, “What do you think your job is if it’s not to deal with complaints as the manager?”
The video has since gone viral, gaining attention among viewers.
Many viewers sympathized with the employee and criticized the manager’s handling of the situation.
One commenter wrote: The good employees ALWAYS get punished.
Another said: Time to start complaining incessantly.
Some advised the worker to seek new opportunities. “I’d still start looking for another position,” one user suggested.
While the manager eventually corrected the schedule, the initial unfairness underscores the challenges employees face when their dedication is taken for granted.
For businesses, fostering a balanced and respectful work environment is essential to retaining hardworking staff.
