East coast's shaky history: A look back at notable earthquakes
The recent 4.7 magnitude earthquake in New Jersey and New York City serves as a reminder of the East Coast's vulnerability to seismic activity, although major earthquakes are less frequent compared to the West Coast. Here's a historical perspective on some of the most significant earthquakes to hit the region:
Recent Tremors (20th & 21st Century)
2011: A 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered near Washington D.C. rattled the East Coast from North Carolina to Maine.
2002: A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Adirondack Mountains of New York, causing localized damage.
1998: The Pymatuning Lake region in New York experienced a 5.2 magnitude earthquake, the strongest recorded in the state's history.East Coast's Strongest Quake (19th Century)
1886: A devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Charleston, South Carolina.
This quake, the strongest in recorded U.S. Eastern history, claimed 60 lives and caused widespread damage across the city. Financial losses were estimated at $5-6 million at the time, equivalent to nearly $2 billion today.
1944: A 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Massena, New York caused significant property damage, the most destructive on the East Coast since 1886.
1897: An estimated 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered in Pearisburg, Virginia caused structural damage and panic as far south as Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
1783: A 5.3 magnitude earthquake originating in the New Jersey Highlands was felt across a broad region, from New Hampshire to Pennsylvania.
1755: A powerful earthquake, estimated at 6.0 magnitude, struck Cape Ann, Massachusetts and was felt from Canada to the Chesapeake Bay.
