The floating house was spotted in San Francisco during a solar eclipse.
Crowds were stunned after seeing the floating house while gathering along the waterfront at San Francisco’s Exploratorium to watch the solar eclipse earlier this month.
They recounted noticing something unusual floating in the water.
Onlookers insisted that it was a big wooden house sitting in the middle of the water. The mysterious floating house remained in San Francisco Bay for at least three days.
The full-sized two-story house was seen floating on the San Francisco Bay on April 8th.
The house managed to successfully navigate itself past Alcatraz Island with help from a slow tow boat.
It was then not seen for a little while, before it was tracked down by Nexstar’s KRON last Tuesday (16 April). It's now anchored in Richardson Bay, north of San Francisco and offshore from Sausalito.
Onlookers quickly reported the incident to US Coast Guard officials.
US Coast Guard then investigated and responded to the incident.
US Coast Guard officials have since said the floating house was able to float because it's on a large barge.
The floating house began its voyage somewhere south of the San Francisco Bay, the Coast Guard has also confirmed.
On YouTube the video showed the floating house in San Francisco Bay, leaving viewers stunned.
The video has the caption: "The North Bay is the final destination for this rare sight in the San Francisco Bay -- it's a two-story houseboat out to sea! STORY"
Many viewers sparked discussions about the floating house in San Francisco Bay and sought to find out where it went.
One person joked: When rent is too high you build your own home in the water.
A second wrote: It's like the house in the ocean from the Monument Mythos.
While a third commented: Ah damn, now someone at Disney gonna get an idea from this and to make a movie called "Float".
Someone else said: I grew up in SF and go to the Pier all the time and have never seen a floating house in the bay...
Another added: I've been a shipboat captain for 25 years and I've had to captain vessels like these.
The mystery of the floating house in San Francisco Bay was solved
The boat was the last of a community of houseboats that was evicted from Docktown at the Redwood City Marina.
The collection of houses was once home to more than 100 people, but a year-long legal battle has left them displaced.
The city paid out over $1 million in settlements, with the houseboat seen recently the second to last still remaining at Docktown, according to SFGate.
Phil Hott, who knows a fair bit about houseboats, told NBC Bay Area:
"It was up a twisty channel, so you have to have the tide right and you have to come down without the wind blowing you into the bank.
"These things are very heavy. Then it has to travel through the Bay. And the winds and the tide changes and the current is going out. You don’t want it to drag you out to the Golden Gate Bridge."
