Comedian Bill Maher shares insights after meeting Donald Trump, arranged by Kid Rock to ‘unite the country’
Bill Maher, famously critical of Donald Trump, recently had an unexpected meeting with the former president. The encounter took place at the White House on March 31.
Kid Rock, a vocal Trump supporter, invited Maher to the meeting. His goal was simple: spark dialogue and reduce political division through conversation.
The meeting aimed to show common ground between political opposites
According to Kid Rock, the event wasn’t just symbolic. Speaking on Varney & Co, he explained that the conversation revealed surprising areas of agreement.
“Bill Maher supports Trump’s stance on the border and is anti-woke,” said Kid Rock. “They even discussed Iran’s nuclear ambitions.”
He said; “For all the people who treated this like it was some sort of summit meeting, you’re ridiculous. Like I was gonna sign a treaty or something? I’m a f***ing comedian, I have no power.
“He’s the most powerful leader in the world, I’m not the leader of anything, expect maybe a contingent of center-ist minded people who think that there’s got to be a better way of running this country than hating each other every minute.”
The singer emphasized that the tone was civil. Despite Maher’s reputation as a Trump critic, both men listened and responded respectfully.
Bill Maher reflects on the meeting during his show Real Time
Maher waited to share his side until the April 12 episode of Real Time with Bill Maher. His audience eagerly awaited the comedian’s honest take.
In his Book Report segment, Maher explained the purpose of attending the meeting. He and Kid Rock agreed it was time for something more than insults from afar.
“I’m just a comedian. Trump is a former president. But we both agreed the country needs less hate and more real conversation,” Maher told viewers.
His remarks drew applause, highlighting the audience’s support for respectful political dialogue, even between fierce ideological opponents.
Maher brought humor to the table with a list of Trump’s past insults
Maher revealed a humorous detail about the dinner. He brought a list of 60 insults Trump had tweeted about him over the years.
From “dummy” to “third-rate comedian,” Maher had the former president sign each one. Trump reportedly did it with a laugh and good humor.
“I didn’t go MAGA,” Maher clarified. “But Trump didn’t pressure me to. It was civil, shockingly normal.”
He added that the Trump he met in person seemed more self-aware than his online persona suggests.
Additionally, Maher says the Trump he met wasn’t the same as the online version. Reflecting on the evening, Maher noted that many of the things he disliked about Trump were missing from the meeting.
“The guy I met wasn’t the one who trashed the dinner on social media the night before,” Maher said. “It was a different side.”
He even suggested that Trump’s public persona might be exaggerated for effect, calling him more self-aware than many assume.
