In a village near Kunming in southern China, a visitor was stunned after spotting a fish with a 'human face' in the lake and recorded a video capturing an eerie carp.
The video was originally posted on Webibo in 2019, leaving numerous people creeping out.
The footage showed the fish swimming to the lake's edge and head above the surface of the water.
The fish was spotted to have a dark head that looked like eyes, two vertical lines akin to nostrils, and a horizontal line mimicking a mouth. A woman in the video exclaims: "The fish has turned into a fairy."
On Weibo - a Chinese social media platform, numerous were shocked and understandably spooked by the sign.
One person said: It is a koi that is just his color pattern. I used to have one just like it.
A second wrote: They remind me of that one fish from a hungry shark.
A third commented: Everyone shut up, this is probably a koi carp with weird patterns on its face.
The fish is real but it's just the color shading on the head that makes it look like a face, it's just a regular koi fish. Someone else said.
However, this isn't the first time someone has reported seeing a human face in a fish. In 2010, a 44-year-old British man claimed that a carp he had purchased five months earlier began to develop human-like facial features.
Brendan O'Sullivan from Dagenham, Essex, said: "It was astonishing. I could easily make out from the markings two eyes, a nose, and a mouth. I thought I was suffering from sunstroke."
The fish is said to be worth an estimated £40,000.
