While humans are not their preferred choice of food, it doesn't mean they won't bite if provoked. These worms are drawn to the surface by the scent of decaying meat, fish, and seaweed.

A recently viral and horrifying video depicted Australonuphis appearing after catching a whiff of some food.

One person said: Me and a friend when we were kids walked out on a sand bar we were a good 400 or so meters from the beach and these worms started biting our feet.. they got us the whole way back to shore we were terrified.

A second warned: Aussie beaches, of course. I would not walk barefoot in that whole country, least of all go to the beach. I may be walking and get some Dune worms to come out of the sand and swallow me for lunch.

A third wrote: Literally no space is safe in Australia. Just one big island of Tim Burton creatures and Vegemites.

Another said: I hope you know I had nightmares of this last night after seeing it !!

Someone else commented: Lol this isn't the thing you need to worry about it won't touch you it is only after fish. What you have to worry about are bristle worms, stonefish, blue ring octopus, happy moments, lionfish, irrakanji, box jellyfish, toadfish, sting rays, and sea snakes.

These creatures can reach lengths of up to three meters, which places them alongside spiders, snakes, and sharks in terms of intimidating wildlife.

However, if the creatures mentioned above already evoke horror, then brace yourself for something even more shocking.

It was a Sea Lamprey, nourishing itself on minuscule algae and microorganisms before embarking on a sea journey to hunt for bigger fish.

The creature in the picture has been described as a terrifying 'vampire' after being spotted in the water near the Welsh coastline. It describes it as something out of the film 'Teeth.'

Surprisingly, this creature is a Sea Lamprey, a species that dates back 340 million years and can grow up to two feet in length.
