On February 28, 2024, an Indian weightlifter nearly lost his life after consuming 39 coins and 37 magnets in an attempt to support his bodybuilding progress.

The 26-year-old weightlifter, whose identity remains undisclosed, believed that zinc, present in the coins, would aid in his bodybuilding progress.

Additionally, he thought that ingesting magnets would further enhance this process. However, his theories proved to be silly mistakes.

The disastrous consequences happened after the man consumed 39 coins and 37 magnets

After several weeks of consuming the coins and magnets, the weightlifter experienced vomiting and abdominal pain, prompting him to seek medical attention.

When he came to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, doctors conducted X-rays which revealed the presence of large metallic clots in his intestines.

The doctors claimed that the coins and magnets had caused an intestinal obstruction, requiring an immediate surgical intervention.

During the operation, surgeons successfully removed all 39 coins and 37 magnets from the patient's stomach and intestines.

The procedure also revealed that the magnets had formed two separate loops in the small intestine, causing erosion along the intestinal wall due to their magnetic force.

Fortunately, the medical team was able to address the issue and prevent further complications.

Consuming such a large quantity of metal objects, especially coins containing zinc, can lead to zinc toxicity.

The acidic fluids in the stomach can cause zinc to leach from the coins, resulting in various symptoms such as stomach pains, diarrhea, and vomiting.

In severe cases, zinc toxicity can even be life-threatening.

Following the surgery, the patient remained in the hospital for seven days to recover before being discharged.
