The contestant, Kimberly Wright from Apopka, Florida, was on the verge of winning $7,250 on April 30. However, a major mistake sent fans into a spiral.

Wright made it to the express round, where the remaining letters on the board read 'D U _ _ – _ _ L L E D PLATYPUS.' The audience began cheering, as the answer, 'duck-billed platypus,' was clear to them.

However, Wright chose the letter 'F,' thinking the answer was 'duck-filled platypus,' leading to a collective groan from the audience.

Wright's error allowed her rival, Marie Kioski, to complete the puzzle during her turn and win $7,250.

Kioski also won a pass to the Puerto Rican Margaritaville Vacation Club Rio Mar. Fans of Wheel of Fortune expressed their bafflement at Wright's incorrect answer on social media.

On social media, many share their reactions after Contestant's Costly Mistake

One person said: I remember learning about the duck-billed platypus in elementary school. Funny how we carry bits and pieces of various school lessons throughout our lives.

A second wrote: Many of them on the show are not very smart.  The men seem to be even worse.

While a third commented: As a Jeopardy! fan, I am thrilled beyond words that I dodged this frenzy bullet.

Someone else said: Give her a break! She's American - what do you expect?

Another added: in my mind she could have had the words duck and platypus and still would have not chosen the "B"

The episode, hosted by Sajak himself, aired nearly a month after his final show.

Sajak's last show, which he hosted for more than 40 years, is set to air on Friday, June 7, according to Deadline. The farewell episode was recorded on April 5th.

The legendary host confirmed his retirement from the show in June 2023.

'Well, the time has come,' Sajak wrote in a statement. 'I've decided that our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last. It's been a wonderful ride, and I'll have more to say in the coming months. Many thanks to you all. (If nothing else, it'll keep the clickbait sites busy!).'

His co-host, Vanna White, responded: "When we started @WheelofFortune who could have imagined we’d still be at it 41 seasons later? I couldn’t be happier to have shared the stage with you for all these years with one more to come. Cheers to you, @patsajak!"

Ryan Seacrest was confirmed to take over as host for Season 42, one week after Sajak's news broke.
