A woman in California recently experienced an incredible stroke of luck when she won $1 million on a scratch-off ticket, even though she didn’t scratch it.

Cornelia Treichel-Rocque, a resident of Sacramento, California, was announced as one of the three winners of the Cloud 9 scratch ticket in an October 2023 press release.

Ms. Treichel-Rocque purchased the “Cloud 9” scratch ticket at a Raley’s store in Lodi, San Joaquin County, back in October 2023.
The unusual part is that she did not scratch the ticket to see if she had won. Instead, she simply scanned the ticket’s barcode at one of the over 23,000 California Lottery retail locations.

“It’s funny, and this is also going to sound weird, but I bought that game because I liked the way it looked.
“I buy the ones that catch my eye, and I don’t scratch them. Hey, what can I say, I’ve worked hard to get all my little quirks!”
When she scanned the ticket, Ms. Treichel-Rocque said she initially didn’t believe she had won.
She had to scan the ticket three more times to confirm. It wasn’t until she went back to the Raley’s store the next day and scanned the ticket again that she truly believed she had won the $1 million grand prize.
“I don’t scratch them. I scan them. It’s just quicker that way. And that’s how I found out I won.”
Commenting on her ticket-buying habits, Ms. Treichel-Rocque stated that she often buys tickets that catch her eye, but never scratches them open.
“I never scratch these tickets open. I just scan them. It’s faster that way,” she said.
Even though she has become a millionaire, Ms. Treichel-Rocque continues to play the California Lottery scratch tickets.
She shared that her latest ticket is purple, her favorite color, and she has absolutely no intention of scratching it open.
“The one I’m playing now is purple. That’s my favorite color and no I’m not scratching it,” she said.
The store where the ticket was purchased will also benefit from the woman’s good fortune.
Lottery retailers receive a bonus for selling winning tickets, and this store will receive a significant amount for selling a $1 million winning ticket.
This is great news for the store owner, who said that it’s the largest winning ticket they have ever sold.
According to the woman, she plans to use her winning wisely.
