World's most dangerous airport where pilots are afraid of flying

Tuesday, 16/04/2024, 17:56 (GMT+7)

These are the reasons why Lukla Airport is feared by pilots worldwide.

Lukla Airport is known as the most dangerous airport in the world. Pilots are afraid to fly there because it has many risks.

The airport is in the Himalayas and has a short runway. The weather is unpredictable, with strong winds and low visibility. It's a challenging place for pilots to land and take off safely.

Lukla Airport is located high up in the mountains, about 9,000 feet above sea level. This presents many difficulties for pilots.

The airport is surrounded by steep mountains, leaving very little space for mistakes when taking off or landing. The weather there is also unpredictable, with strong winds and visibility that can change suddenly.

All of these factors make it even more challenging and dangerous for pilots.

One of the most significant factors contributing to Lukla Airport's notoriety is its exceptionally short runway.

Lukla Airport's runway is exceptionally short, measuring only 1,729 feet in length.

Pilots must navigate the runway with great precision, particularly when faced with challenging weather conditions such as rain and strong winds.

The limited space increases the risks involved in both landing and taking off.

The high location of Lukla Airport has a huge impact on the air. The air is thinner because of the high altitude, and this affects how well the airplane's engines work.

It becomes difficult to generate enough power for takeoff and landing.

Also, because there is less air resistance, it's harder for pilots to slow down the plane. These factors make flying at Lukla Airport even more challenging.

Furthermore, the runway at Lukla Airport goes uphill, making it even trickier for planes to land and take off.

Pilots have to deal with the slope while controlling the speed and direction of the aircraft.

Remarkably, the airport can only operate during the daytime and when the weather is good. Strong winds, fog, and poor visibility can cause the airport to shut down, making it riskier for pilots.

Because Lukla Airport is known to be dangerous, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal has made strict rules to keep everyone safe.

Pilots have to go through intense training and meet specific criteria before they can fly to or from this risky airport.

These measures are in place to reduce the dangers and make sure passengers and crew members are protected.
