You don't want unexpected health problems. So, you should not continue sitting for prolonged periods on the toilet.

According to the survey, a lot of people spend ten minutes or even longer on the toilet. For them, it's a habit to take some time for themselves, making it the only part of the day they have for personal relaxation.

They also spend hours on the toilet engaging in activities such as watching TikTok, reading a magazine, or taking photos on their phones.

According to the NordVPN study, around 65 percent of 9,800 adults surveyed mentioned that they take their phones with them when they go to the toilet.

However, many are unaware that spending too much time on the toilet can lead to unexpected health problems. This highlights a concerning habit.

On TikTok, a doctor has warned that you shouldn't spend more than 10 minutes on the toilet to avoid risking your health.

Posting on TikTok, Dr. Roshini Raj, a gastroenterologist at NYU Langone, reveals that doing so can lead to the necessity for hemorrhoid surgery.

However, if you continue the habit of sitting for prolonged periods on the toilet, you may develop hemorrhoids that can be painful in the anal area.

He explained: "Number one, straining. Fun fact, everyone has anal cushions. These are there to stop us pooing ourselves and they also contain blood vessels."

"But if you keep straining on the toilet these blood vessels could swell up and cause hemorrhoids."

"His second tip was that you shouldn't 'spend your life on the toilet."

"Try not to spend on average more than ten minutes on the toilet. Gravity is not your friend."

"The longer you spend on the toilet the longer the blood can pool in these rectal veins causing hemorrhoids."

The video quickly went viral and gained 2.6 million views and 5,000 comments. While some people were surprised about the NHS reveal, others stated that they don't want to give up their habit

Hemorrhoids are lumps in or around the buttocks that can be very painful.

To minimize the risk of developing hemorrhoids,  it is recommended that you exercise regularly, keep your buttocks clean and dry, and limit the consumption of alcohol and caffeine.

The NHS also recommends that you drink plenty of fluids and eat plenty of fiber to keep your stools soft.

Dr Karan added: "Unless you have a specific medical condition you should be aiming for 20 to 30g of fibre a day.

"So you don't always have to cut the crusts off your bread and keep the skin on your fruit and veg."

The video quickly went viral and gained 2.6 million views and 5,000 comments. While some people were surprised about the NHS reveal, others stated that they don't want to give up their habit.

One person said: The real danger I think is in picking up microorganisms from the toilet, a major cause of urinary tract infections.

A second wrote: Once when I was younger my dad went to the toilet & was in there for at least half an hour so I called my mum thinking he had taken off & he was just in the toilet the whole time.

While a third commented: People need to truly heed this warning. I’m having surgery in a few days because of it  … and I’m only 33!!!

Someone else added: When I was a kid I was on the toilet for an hour or more. As an adult, there are times I find myself in the bathroom for 30 minutes or more.
