In a viral video on TikTok, a flight attendant revealed that greeting passengers on board is more than a simple courtesy

While the greeting is partly out of politeness, it's also an important moment for the cabin crew to assess each passenger.

According to flight attendant Rania (@itsmekikooooo) in a video shared on TikTok, the real reason she says hi when you board is for more than just courtesy.

Flight attendants revealed that they observe your behavior, appearance, and overall condition. Here's what they're really checking for.

Sobriety and health

Your flight attendant isn't just being friendly; they're evaluating whether you might be too drunk or ill to fly.

In the footage, Rania explains, "Your flight attendant greets you, not only out of politeness, but also to check whether you are too drunk or sick to fly."

If a passenger appears intoxicated or visibly ill, the crew needs to address it promptly. Ensuring everyone's safety is their top priority.

Additionally, Rania also revealed that the flight attendants look for passengers who might be able to assist in an emergency.

In case of an emergency, they need passengers who can assist effectively. Look for those who appear able-bodied, speak English, and seem capable of handling emergency procedures.

These individuals become valuable assets during critical situations.

Many social media users have shared their thoughts on this revelation.

One user mentioned how they hid their pancreatitis to avoid being denied boarding. Others joked about ignoring flight attendants or commented on how the explanation made sense of the looks they receive when boarding.

One person said: I’m always super friendly to them, attentive, usually travel solo, and look like an experienced traveler. Now I know why they keep putting me in the row that responds to airplane emergencies right next to the door.

A second wrote:  Same reason I used to always greet a customer at the bar before serving them.

While a third commented: People say hello to be polite? I work security, so I'm definitely not just trying to be polite. A lot of the time, it's to get someone's attention so I can ask them what they're doing and tell them to leave the property.

Another added: Yes, it is partly due to being polite, as is customary for anyone working cabin crew. But the warm welcome is only part of the task she's been given in that moment. What she's actually doing is analysing every passenger for other motives.

Someone else said: If you are nice to them and they like your tone of voice, they will gladly help you with questions.
