Tuesday, 27/02/2024, 15:30 (GMT+7)

In a viral video on TikTok, a flight attendant left viewers stunned after explaining the reason why cabin crew sit on their hands during takeoff and landing.

As a flight attendant, she utilized TikTok to elucidate the practice of in-flight staff securing themselves in their jump seats and assuming the 'bracing position' during the aircraft's landing phase.

The original video was posted in 2022; however, now it is surrounded again on TikTok after one user shared it again.

In the footage, a flight attendant elucidates the practice of in-flight staff securing the plane during takeoff and landing.

The video began with the question, 'Ever wonder why cabin crew sits like this during takeoff & landing?' and showed the flight attendant the 'landing' posture in her jump seat.

In the video, a voiceover clarified: 'It's called "bracing position"'.

The flight attendant explained in the video that his position entails securing seatbelts tightly,  "sitting upright, sitting on hands—arms up, thumbs tucked—and keeping arms loose with feet flat on the floor.

The flight attendant went on to explain why passengers should maintain the bracing position on the plane.

She revealed that the purpose is to keep the body in a rigid pose, which leads to decreased injury in the event of an unforeseen emergency impact, while the passenger's body is damaged less.

During the flight, the flight attendant will also be going through the "silent review" to prepare for the emergency.

During this period, the flight attendants express their 'silent review' to prepare for emergencies during takeoff and landing.

This involves familiarizing themselves with emergency equipment locations, door operations, and commands, and observing external visual cues.

Below the video, several viewers rush to comment and express their surprise about Henny's revelation.

One person said: Airlines, ever thought that might be a handy tip to advise every passenger to sit like that on takeoff?!

A second wrote: If airlines and regulators really cared about passenger safety, all seats would face backward.

While a third commented: Umm seatbelts I understand, but if the body is in a rigid position,  the likelihood of injuries increases not decreases.  That has been proven over and over.

Someone else said: I’m sure that will lessen the detrimental effects of any impact. Like the seat flotation devices.

The video helps shed light on the Federal Aviation Administration's memo.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration's memo, there are two primary reasons for adopting the bracing position: reducing flailing and minimizing secondary impact.

'One is to reduce flailing and the other is to reduce secondary impact,' it read.

'Secondary impact can be reduced by prepositioning the body (particularly the head) against the surface it would strike during impact.

'Flailing can be reduced by having the occupant flex, bend, or lean forward over their legs in some manner.'
