People are stunned after discovering why motorway signs are green

Wednesday, 26/06/2024, 16:53 (GMT+7)

Do you know why motorway signs often come in green? It has a specific reason for that.

Highway signs and symbols come in different colors, and each color has a specific purpose to ensure driver safety.

Recently, a TikTok user shared the reason why some motorway signs are green in color.

According to TikTok user @zachdfilms3, the use of green color for these signs is to ensure driver safety.

He explained that "Stop" and "Wrong Way" signs are painted in red to quickly grab the driver's attention. However, this would be too distracting if applied to the directional signs on the motorway.

Instead, these signs are made in a green color, a calmer shade that does not overly disrupt the driver's field of vision.

This helps the driver focus more on safe driving rather than being distracted by overly prominent signs. This color-coding of traffic signs is also applied in many other countries.

This color scheme creates a visual hierarchy, helping drivers quickly process needed information.

According to the user's sharing, in the US, green is used for guide signs that provide direction, distance, and other navigational information.

Meanwhile, red is reserved for regulatory signs that require the driver to take a specific action, such as stopping or yielding.

The reason behind this color scheme is to create a visual hierarchy that allows drivers to quickly process the information they need.

Regulatory signs in red stand out more prominently, while guide signs in green provide contextual information in a less disruptive manner.

This system not only helps drivers stay focused on the road but also reduces the risk of accidents caused by information overload or distraction.

By using a calmer color like green, the motorway signs blend into the environment and allow drivers to maintain their concentration.

Remarkably, this color-coding approach is not limited to motorways.

Similar principles are applied to other modes of transportation, such as aviation and maritime navigation, where color plays a crucial role in conveying critical information to operators.

Previously, a Reddit user had posted an image of a sign that they believed 99% of drivers do not know the meaning of.

The sign is a round sign with a white background and a single black line going through it at a 45-degree angle.

Many drivers have made inferences and teases about the meaning of this sign, creating curiosity about its true meaning.

According to the RAC website, this sign indicates that the national speed limit applies on the upcoming stretch of road.

The national speed limit varies depending on the type of road and vehicle, such as 30 mph in urban areas with street lights, 60 mph on one-way roads, and 70 mph on motorways and dual carriageways.

While the sign indicates the speed limit, drivers should still use their judgment to drive safely and appropriately for the road conditions and traffic.
