Tipping remains a contentious issue, with opinions flooding social media platforms as individuals express their stances on the ongoing debate. Some argue that the tipping culture has spiraled 'out of control' in recent months, whether it's for a simple walk-in haircut or an online purchase.
Recent research reveals that a simple technique can significantly boost the average tip in restaurants by an impressive 11 percent.
A recent study found that a simple trick can help with restaurant bill amount left for servers
According to a study published in the International Journal of Hospitality Management, the inclusion of emojis alongside tip suggestions during the payment process has a notable effect on tipping behavior.
The study authors state, "We also demonstrate that the presence of emojis increases the positive emotions experienced by customers during the payment transaction, which in turn positively impacts tipping percentage,"
Additionally, the presence of emojis enhances positive emotions experienced by customers during payment, consequently influencing tipping percentages positively.
These findings hold true across various dining scenarios, from full-service restaurants to third-party food delivery services. In full-service establishments, the introduction of emojis increases the average tip from 22.8 percent to 25.38 percent.
Similarly, for food-delivery apps, tips provided to workers surge from 14.66 percent to 16.11 percent. However, the most significant impact is observed in takeout orders, where the average tip rises from 12.61 percent to 16.75 percent.
The study indicated that tipping led to greater price consciousness among consumers.
The researchers also note that excessive tipping has made many consumers more cautious about their expenditures.
They explain, "The presence of emojis triggers positive emotions, leading to an enhanced emotional experience for the customer, thereby resulting in a larger tip compared to transactions without emojis."
The use of a smiley face can increase the amount that customers tip service staff
In particular, it activates the occipitotemporal cortex, a brain region associated with facial perception. This essentially internalizes positive facial expressions.
The study emphasizes that techniques such as drawing smiley faces, physical gestures like a touch on the shoulder, or maintaining eye-level contact have been studied as effective methods to increase tipping amounts.
Perhaps the server criticized for their questionable tipping approach, after leaving a strategic note on the bill, would have fared better by opting for an emoji instead.
