The Science behind the taste

The distinct taste of McDonald’s Coca-Cola has long been a subject of speculation and conspiracy theories.

Especially since the same beverage seems to taste different depending on where it's sold. Food scientist Abbey Thiel recently addressed these theories in an interview with Parade.

According to Thiel, soft drink producers typically have their own water suppliers or filtration systems to enhance the quality of water.

The water treatment process often involves the removal of chlorine, which can cause a ‘disinfectant’ taste.

The hardness of the water is also adjusted as it affects the acidity of the drink, and iron is removed to prevent color and flavor defects.

Thiel explained, “Without this treatment, the end result is a Coke that has off-flavors and aromas due to low-quality, inconsistent water."

In 2021, the fast-food chain stated, “There are many reasons the Coca-Cola® tastes so great at McDonald’s. We simply follow the guidelines set by Coca-Cola® and take steps to ensure that we serve a high-quality fountain beverage."

According to the statement, the water and Coca-Cola® syrup are pre-chilled before entering the fountain dispensers, with the syrup ratio set to allow for ice to melt.

The fountain beverage system is also kept cold to ensure the drink is always refreshing.

Furthermore, all the water is filtered before it enters the fountain dispensers to maintain a gold standard.

They said: "In order to ensure our drinks are always meeting a gold standard, we filter all the water before it enters fountain dispensers."

Interestingly, the statement also mentioned that the straw used at McDonald's contributes to the taste experience.

It is slightly wider than a typical straw, allowing more of the Coke® flavor to reach the taste buds. This attention to detail could be another reason why McDonald's Coke stands out in taste.
