Truth behind mystery 'pyramid' beneath Antarctic ice

The shape of an image captured an intriguing pyramid-like formation in the southern region of Antarctica's Ellsworth Mountain range, raising questions about its origin and purpose.

While Antarctica is known for its icy and inhospitable conditions, a viral conspiracy theory suggests that someone or something might have constructed a pyramid in this remote area.

The images reveal several peculiar peaks in the vicinity, one of which measures two kilometers on each side of its square base, resembling the design of Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza.

As these 'pyramids' have reemerged in the spotlight recently, various theories have emerged, attempting to explain the possible origins and significance of this massive structure.

One user suggested: Could be. But looks like rock, if they found it in the Amazon and made of dirt I'd believe it

A second said: Earth's Crust Displacement pushed  Antarctica 1500 miles south around 12000 years ago. It may have been occupied so no real surprise if man-made structures are being found.

A third commented: As reported previously, there is apparently a no-fly zone over the Antarctica region. The pyramid was probably the blueprint for the ones found in Egypt, that is the only credible reason that they existed to this day...

Numerous people have put forward the notion that either artificial life forms or the elusive secret society known as 'the Illuminati' might be responsible for this apparent structure, while others attribute the design to humans.

On the other hand, there have been more fantastical interpretations. For instance, one user proposed, 'This structure belongs to the civilization that existed before the flood. Around 10,000 years ago, Antarctica was warm.'

However, before delving too deeply into these theories, it's essential to clarify that the 'pyramid' under discussion is, in fact, just a mountain.

This enigmatic structure is a characteristic of glaciated regions and is referred to as 'pyramidal peaked mountains.'

According to IFLScience, Dr. Mitch Darcy, a geologist at the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, states: 'The pyramid-shaped structures are located in the Ellsworth Mountains, which is a range more than 400 km long, so it's no surprise there are rocky peaks cropping out above the ice. The peaks are clearly composed of rock, and it's a coincidence that this particular peak has that shape.'

He continued, 'It's not a complicated shape, so it's not a special coincidence either. By definition, it is a nunatak, which is simply a peak of rock sticking out above a glacier or an ice sheet. This one has the shape of a pyramid, but that doesn't make it a human construction.'

The Ellsworth Mountains, situated within the Chilean Antarctic territorial claim, constitute the highest mountain range in Antarctica.

They form a chain of mountains extending 350 km in length and 48 km in width, aligned in a north-to-south configuration along the western edge of the Ronne Ice Shelf in Marie Byrd Land.

These mountains were initially discovered in 1935 by Lincoln Ellsworth during a trans-Antarctic flight that took him from Dundee Island to the Ross Ice Shelf.

The Ellsworth Mountains typically endure frigid temperatures, averaging around -30°C, and offer only a brief window for exploration, with the prime expedition period occurring between November and January.
